yeah I think so now shane, as having looked into it further it seems I need in ear to save sound leakage, etc, which makes sense.

I know that its been a while since the last post but I would just like to add my opinion incase any others are choosing between these 2. I actually own the MDR-EX082 which are the ones that come with the Walkman NWZ-A289 DAP. They are the same as the MDR-EX85 though in every aspect except the Walkman branding on these. The Sony is a little weak on the highs compared to the Senny's while the latter is slightly weaker on the bass. The sound of the Sony is a bit more warmer.

Yes, the Sony do leak sound from the back where there is a large vent covered in some material that leaks sound through it a bit. The Senny's are fully closed design as they create "pressure" when pushed into your ear. The isolation is slightly poorer due to the vent on the side compared to the Senny. You have an option to cover the Sony's back vent with something like bluetac or something that doesn't let sound through and you will get a significant bass boost as well as slightly more detailed sound and the "pressure" when inserting in your ear. This also adds more noise isolation than normal to the Sony's evening it out with the Senny's. The con of doing this is that when inserting, the pressure causes a crackling sound which I think is the movement of the plastic diaphragm within the driver. I'm not sure if this causes any damage so you may do this at your own risk.

Also the Sony's sound is wider and less "In your head" whilst the sound from the Senny's is more "in your head" if you get what I mean. This might be because the Sony doesn't go in as deep as the Senny's.

As for the cords, I'd say that probably the Senny's are more durable. I've only had one problem with the right wire splitting on the Sony near where they split. I fixed it though with some solder. As with the Senny's I've never had any problems with its cables yet.

I prefer the Sony's more as they have a nicer smooth warm sound and more bass. I'd just like to add that I also own the MDR-EX70 and the MDR-EX85 are far ahead so don't base your decision on older Sony models if you have owned any. Good luck.
