I bought a new laptop - help meeee!

I am getting a bit frustrated at this shiny new laptop because it won't let me have anything!

It won't let me have Firefox or MSN messenger. It says firefox isn't windows compatible and the MSN live messenger box says it can't install that either.

Someone help me?!

vista should install all the named programs just fine. you maybe trying to instal old versions of the programs, try installing the latest versions.

It's a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Vista. I am trying to install Firefox 3 and the latest MSN from the website.

Bill Gates is out to get me.

Are you opening the setup files straight from the internet or saving them to computer first?

turn off the UAC -

windows menu )bottom corner) > control panel > user accounts (top right corner) > user accounts (again) > page should say "make changes to user account", the bottom link says "turn user account control off"..... click it > untick the box > press ok

this stops windows from opening the box in the screen everytime you want to open a program etc (highly annoying) now try downloading :)

Annoying, but secure :)

Failing this you could enable the hidden admin account and try installing it from there:

right click command prompt (start - all programs - accessories - command prompt :) )

click 'run as administrator'

type in:
net user administrator /active

then press enter

next time you start computer there will be the option for your normal acount, as well as the option for this administrator account

If you have vista it should have 'windows live messenger' on it anyway. Itll be in the start menu
#27
There is totally too much going on in this thread that confuses me!

I am the admin account. Neither of the things have a right click menu option that says anything about an admin account.

I have tried installing them from both a saved file and just from running the installer straight from the websites.

I will try turning off the user controlly thingy.
#28
Whatever you do, don't take it back to PC World where you bought it. They will be even less helpful! lol.

I'd say it was user settings by the way. The need to install things as an administrator can be very tedious at times but it's for our own good - apparently.

It only has 'Windows Live Messenger Download' which just directs me to the website.

Vista has TWO admin accounts.....the one you are, Which still has limited options and control, as well as the hidden one that I posted above

I did the 'run as administrator' thing and it still won't work. I can't be this stupid, I'm normally quite good with computers!

are you using the version it links you to in start menu? Try clicking run as administrator still :)

And then save the setup file to your comp before installing it, and click run as admin again
