WTF - what the ****

OWNS - the best
JK- Joking
G2G - im off

I've had 'heated discussions' about this with some people who post in text speak on here. They can never see anything wrong with how they post and frequently claim it's "easier" or "quicker" to post like that, which I think is just nonsense. It would take me far longer to think about spelling things wrong and abbreviations than it would to just type normally in proper English! :?

I completely agree with your intellectual ideas and conversation, it can be hard in modern day society to conform to the pressures of fitting in for example reading other peoples written word but that is what makes Britannia a great nation - Is it because im dark skinned?

Oh yer im good :D

me too! Some people would rather save themselves a few seconds and offload the time saved by a factor of hundreds to the people trying to work out what they are saying. I generally skip over anything written in text speak.

Even worse is when people post a thread asking for advice and leave it to everyone else to try fill in the blanks to what the problem is.

E.g. my pc crashes wots up? :whistling:

Completely agree with your post octobergirl.
Some months back, a good point was made in a similar thread that there is justification in using test-speak in a text - small screen, time consuming and some other good points - which I assumed were relevant, as I never 'text'. There are no such reasons on a forum like this and the outcome of such language mangling is that, as you say, it takes ages to trawl through to find the meaning of what has been 'written'.
I won't comment on what I often think about the content once I have deciphered it. :whistling:

Yes, I agree too, don't see the need for text speak on here it's not as if you are limited to an amount of digits per post.

imo, there is a balance to be struck here. An occasional shorthand acronym like my first (in my opinion) and maybe lol (laugh out loud) and a few others are genuine time-savers that most people will pick up quickly and understand. It's when people overuse text-speak for effect and start changing words that it all becomes overly complicated and difficult to read. In this case they are not time-savers, but rather a way of using language to express identity / identification - like the example below (which is being used for humour in this case, but ykwim)

Text speak is a bit stupid, i remember when it was just young girl using it and they told me lol was lots of love
then all my mate were texting lol and i thought they were all Gay lol :-D

That's different vix... :) the brain understands the first letter so thus it can understand the word according to the number of letters :).
#32
:) I'm sure exam boards feel the same...

I bet each and every one of you a fiver that you can read the sentence below (*).

I gesus by nwo taht yru'oe wndreoing waht I maen by tihs but it suohld bmoece aprpenat taht we slhuod all tlak lkie tihs in the frutue.

(*) monopoly money

A different point. A large number of words are easily recognisable after rearranging their letters, especially commonly used 3 & 4 letter words. Adding the occasional longer word makes use of context gradually 'built up' by the reader in the process of reading along with their 'knowledge' of commonly used patterns and collocations... as well as the 1st letter point made by ss above...

Nope, all my own words. I'm a linguist btw

Really... What type?

i thought that as long as the all the letters for a word are there and the first and last letters are in the right place then you can read it (the word or sentence) quite easily. there was a study at Cambridge uni on it (i think)

Applied - more of a language teacher turned social linguist actually. Interests are in critical discourse analysis, new literacy studies and various sub-fields of 'language and education'. Also have a specialist interest in the work of Pierre Bourdieu - a sociologist whose theories I apply to work in the above.

A large number of commonly used words can be recognised in this way, but clearly it also depends on the reader knowing the words in the first place - the contextual clues built in the process of reading must also be taken into account. If for example the sentence didn't make grammatical sense, the reader would be 'thrown' and prompted to reject the initial 'obvious' reading...
