I don't get Car Insurance......

ChrisUK Avatar

Morning all,

The wife's car insurance is due for renewal soon, she has just got herself a 54 plate Vauxhall Meriva 1.7cdti for the impending baby arrival.

She has 6 years no claims, no convictions, no accidents, no claims & the cheapest quote I've got is just over £800 !!!

This is on a group 6 car & I've tried all the major comparison websites??

What I don't get is that by comparison (i.e postcode/address), I have a Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE & pay less than £700 (thats with less no claims bonus, male driver, more mileage etc).

I just don't get it ????

You're a bloke. You are capable of driving in a straight line, she is not.

Check your excess, made big difference on my premium.
#3
add yourself in her insurance, it'll bring it down a notch.
#4
how old are you how old is she??
#5
I think all insurance has shot up in the last 12 months, probably with the state of the economy more people are committing insurance fraud.
#6
Extra charge for spoiling the landscape with such an ugly car? :p

In seriousness, sounds very pricy. Given that she has 6 yrs no claims, have u tried privilege? I think they used to have some special deals for long time NCB
Good luck with the baby!
#7
just to add, try calling footman james (broker),they seem to get really cheap quotes

Marry her and it will drop. Have kids and it will drop some more.

Strange but true.........you are seen as a lower more mature risk.

edit : Just noticed you are married.............scrub no.1 and get to work on no.2. lol

Insurance prices have significantly increased since January. There is a bbc article about it.

Apparently because of all the bad weather and claims that came with it including insurance fraud etc.

My insurance went up by at least 20%. including everyone in my family.

I've tried all the comparison sites so far, not gone through anyone direct just yet. I'll give swift cover a bash though. Thanks

You must either be lying or you must live in an town/island where you and your GF are the only inhabitants..
#27
You tried Direct Line? I don't think they're on any of the comparison websites, they were by far the cheapest for me for years!!

I'm with Sainsburys now, got a 59 plate astra 1.6 and my insurance is only about £300...

I got my car in March (baby was a perfect excuse to get a big car !) & the insurance wasn't so bad (I'm paying about £700, but on a car worth £35000 3 years ago). This has just shocked me though, as I thought her's would be around £400-500
#29
ps - sorry I'm replying to you all individually, I did a big post with multi quotes & it only posted 2 of them !!!
#30
I normally hit the comparison sites, see who is cheapest, then go to them direct via Topcashback/Quidco.

Just seems weird that they are all coming back high.

Don't forget, the £800 was the CHEAPEST I got, some of them were over 2 grand !

try the AA, my wifes renewal has just come through for a 07 plate 1.6 meriva at £157 (Fully Comp)

OK time for a serious post...

Goto your favourite comparison site of choice, fill in your details, see list of policies
Write down the cheapest 5 that you have actually heard of - ignore the ultra cheap random ones - you get what you pay for.
Close browser, clear cache, clear cookies ideally download a new browser.
Goto quidco/topcashback and add to your list the price taking into account cashback.
Choose your best price, click through the tracking list, ensure you answer "no" if they "find an existing account" or similar - make sure you appear as a new customers without competing cookies etc.

Boom!

PS: Always remove Hastings Direct from your list, regardless of price. Always always remove, and never be tempted

There must be something that you are inputting that is bumping the price up.

I can only think it will be home postcode, postcode where car is kept during day and status of parking, occupation?

Try adjusting the occupation to something similar but not the same to see if that changes it?
