I feel like naming and shaming

I am not going to name and shame but I am really annoyed at the moment. An adult with learning difficulties that I know quite well went for an eye test today. She went alone. Its an optician that she has attended previously. When she left the optician she was given the impression that she had a serious requirement to upgrade her glasses perscription urgently. Not however at the most cost effective price. I became aware as she mentioned her urgent need to get new glasses to her neighbour and he suggested she contact me.

I contacted the optician to get the perscription to at least have the option to shop around. From research at online opticians sites it appears to be a mild perscription and from a bit more research I am now aware that she could probably cut £100 off the bill if she needs to.

I am really annoyed that a professional person can take advantage of someone with learning needs in this way. Credit crunch or not.

Rant over

I used to work for an opticians that offered free eye tests to people in residential homes and nursing homes and they blatantly ripped people off. Its disgusting.

There's a hole in the world like a great black pit
And it's filled with people who are filled with ****
And the vermin of the world inhabit it.
But not for long...

They all deserve to die.
Tell you why, Mrs. Lovett, tell you why.
Because in all of the whole human race
Mrs Lovett, there are two kinds of men and only two
There's the one they put in his proper place
And the one with his foot in the other one's face

People who take advantage of the disabled or disadvantaged deserve a beating.

I think it's disgraceful procedure.

Profit is needed by all companies to survive yes. But better to make a name as a *trustworthy* place you can come back to again and again and to send others to also, than to rob a vulnerable person of a rotten £100.

Bad business practice.

While you're at it I may as well say "Don't buy Sumvision gear as they don't honour the guarantee"
Now THAT'S naming and shaming!

Name and shame
TBH that's the way it goes isn't it? That's how companies survive, (i mean profit)

I understand credit crunch and all that but friend thought she was going to go blind or similar unless she got the particular glasses that had been suggested.

Hadn't considered that and now have perscription to proceed elsewhere. Not sure if they will give it any credence without the glasses being purchased through the initial optician. Good idea anyway

It winds me up when defenceless people are seen as prey.

My mates gran was ripped off by several high street opticians when she went to get glasses

She is legally blind FFS (as evident with her white stick) and her family only found out when they discovered her batch of glasses. Luckily a trip with her daughter to Asda's optician and they refused and told her bluntly there was nothing they could do or any reputable optician.

My gut reaction is similar but there is probably a more effective way to deal with this.

Not in the local area but good to know. Optician used is an independent so not a chain that everyone will know.

The opticians ss tried to sell me glasses when they would do no good. I brought them desperate for some sight.
Needless to say being legally blind i wasted my money. They must have known it/

The opticians have contacted her this morning saying that they made a mistake and should have directed her to the cheaper frames but that they had given her some wrong paperwork and she should go back to them. Neighbour says he will accompany her. We have told her to ensure her pockets are empty and not to sign things if she is anywhere near the optician on her own.

I've been out of action, sorry, (trapped nerve, lol)

Sounds painful. Hope it does not go on too long.

Disgraceful. Wasn't ignoring you. Logged off briefly last night and couldn't get back on HUKD. kept getting script errors.
Must admit I did not know what legally blind was. I have read a bit now and hats off to you. I hope you are getting all the help financial and otherwise that you are entitled to.
