Why do you need 32-bit?
#2
What's wrong with 64-bit? You can run 32-bit applications on it..

If you really need to change, you just reinstall vista/xp/windows... Do you have the windows dvd? If not, just download it, and use your key with it...

You can install 32 bit on a 64 bit machine :)

its a brand new laptop, im confused. . . .

it doesnt have a dvd, all it will have is a restore partition.

it wont run some of my software or will it run 32 bit software ok?

In that case, just install XP 32bit and be done with it :P Or dual boot? Meh.

im gonna have to buy a windows home premium 32 bit then lol!

oh well.

this has peeved me i tell you, surely they should put it in writing that you are buying a 64 bit system!!
#7
What software won't it run? Nearly all 32-bit software runs fine - the only real problems are with old hardware which doesn't have 64-bit drivers, but generally software isn't a problem...

When you buy a laptop, you are also purchasing the OS on it... You should have been given a vista install disc... if not, go complain..
As I said, you can just download it, and install using the key that is currently being used on your laptop.

umm lol, most if not all laptops these days dont come with instal discs, well, the mainstream ones anyway. I have to make install discs.

So, will my key work for 32 bit also? or just 64 bit.
#10
Key probably only works for 64-bit. You pay for the software license but not necessarily a Windows install disc (and the oem image in the restore partition is probably only 64-bit anyway).

You still haven't said what the problem is though - is it a particular piece of software that won't run?
#12
Can i just ask,Was the OS already installed when you turned it on as you should have been asked which version you wanted to use or have you been sold a used laptop,
#13
hi there, nope, there was no initial boot question

its brand new, bought it from comet this morning :(:(

i havent installed any of my software, but i dont wanna use my office license and then have to restore again.

i use things like itunes, elements, office, roxio media creator, mcafee etc. will they all work? and my printer?
#15
Itunes, elements, office will all be fine. Roxio you might need a new version of, but there is no doubt already CD-burning software installed anyway. There are plenty of free antivirus which are better than McAfee. Your printer might be a problem, depends what model it is, check the manufacturers site for 64-bit drivers :)

see this is the problem. thanks for your help, but I dont want this, I just want a normal laptop. I hate comet so much. why do they sell these things!!

Avast anti virus is free and runs fine on 64bit Windoze.

I'm pretty certain Vista keys are generic (if thats the right term). They will work for both 32-bit or 64-bit, you just need to download the right copy...

Also, Avira AntiVir Personal is the best free antivirus..

Regular keys might be but I don't think branded-OEM keys are (I could be wrong though...)

Does your laptop have 4GB RAM? If so 64bit Windows is the only way you can use all of it with a Windows opsys. Before you dismiss it, why not check if your printer is supported? As others have said, most software will work and quite a lot of hardware is as well. Plus you can boast to your friends that you have a full, proper 64bit system!
#21
The only software I've ever had problems with when using 64 bit windows was cisco vpn, so I set up a 32-bit virtual machine to run it from, you could do the same if you've got software that only works in a 32-bit environment.
#22
just got off the phone to comet, they wont refund the item, even tho it diddnt say on the product info sheet that it was 64 bit.

god im so stressed!! aaahhhh!!

I bought a mac and had to sell it on cos I couldnt afford to buy loads and loads of new software, now I have to do the same with this cos it looks like this one wont work what I use!! :(

Gutted.com

Considering it was a good deal.

DV3507ea £615 !!

I dont mind buying windows, perhaps this is what I should do? but will all the drivers be available considering the computer was made for 64 bit!

What drivers do you need? Have you actually tried to find out yet?

The OP seems to be the only one here not trying to make an effort to get his laptop working... I don't know why I bother...

:-D Somehow I get the feeling that the OP was hoping for more sympathy and isn't really interested in trying to get the laptop working!

What are you on about? It IS a normal laptop, 64-bit is rapidly becoming the norm (which is 100% a good thing). Your making a big deal out of nothing, if you want to use a dated operating system don't bother looking at laptops with 4GB of ram!

Just use ImgBurn... best burning software there is...
#30
umm, I dont know, but I dont see why I have to make a compromise if you know what I mean? I bought a windows machine to run the software I already have, not to go and buy more software for windows.

The first thing I come across, I use a canon LBP5000 laser printer, let me guess, no 64 bit drivers. So I have to buy a new printer now! ?

???

The 32-bit drivers on canon's website will most prob work fine with this anyway. I think you're making a mountain out of a mole hill. When you go home test it out and if there's any problems look for solutions. No need to speculate on problems that probably don't exist.

To be honest, ImgBurn is better than Nero or whatever... much simpler, and much easier to use... much less bloatware...

I've never had any software that wouldn't run on 64bit vista, even old software tends to run if you follow this:

Install the software first.

Right click on the program launch icon

Left click on "Properties".

In the new window that pops up click on the "Compatibility" tab.

In the "Compatibility Mode" area check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"

In the drop down list make certain that "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" is selected.

Under "Privilege Level" make certain that the box next to "Run this program as administrator" is checked.

Click on "Apply" then click on "Ok".

Double click on the program launch icon.

Seriously we've tried to help and you won't listen. STFU and try it seriously. What are you on about your iphone you mean itunes? That works fine and has done for years, vista has drivers for most printers already. Most software should work fine out the box.

god, considering i dont know what I am dealing with here, bitof a harsh answer isnt it?
