I've had my iPhone 3G for a year now. Every time an update comes out all I end up with is problems. I'll download the updates in iTunes, then it'll get half way through updating it and come up with "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (13)."

So right now my iPhone is bricked. In the past I've been able to copy some files over from my laptop to my PC and fiddle with them til it works, unfortunately I got rid of my PC to make room, so now I'm stumped! To be fair I shouldn't have to mess about with it every time an update comes out. The first time it happened I took it to the O2 shop who said it was nothing to do with them. I'm bored of O2 and Apple fobbing me off with the "make sure you're using the current version of iTunes" and a million other excuses because I do everything they say. When you google the error code reams of pages come up with the same problem so it's clearly not just me who has endless problems with this piece of crap.

Is there anything I can do about this? I'm at the end of my tether and will be going down to the O2 shop tomorrow to try and get a different phone, or get out of my contract all together. Anyone got any cool clauses I can quote? :P

right well if you dont like it then send it on to me then...ffs....

I think networks have been providing warranties which match the contractual period, so if you are still in yours, O2 should be helping you.
#3
o2 wont change instore - will just send it off for you - if its out of the year warranty it'll be hard to persuade them to even send it off.

They won't let you get out of your contract.

You should have brought it in after the first update, or the second.

but a year on.. theres been many updates in the last year.

I *hate* my n97.

Sorry to hear ur having probs m8 had mine for same time no issues

It's already been to the O2 shop once and they told me to get in touch with Apple about the problem.

I told them I wanted it sorted, since I'm paying £7.50 a month insurance on it too, but they still didn't want to know.

I know they'll only send it off, but that's not an option for me since my phone is full of stuff I need for work, so I guess I'll have to do my best to get it in a usable state again.. *grumbles*

If its insured accidentally drop it in the store.

Brand new phone then.

I may have already accidentally dropped one before - the power button might have been knackered after less than a month. The guy told me to bring it in and they'd replace the phone no quibbles. I took it in and guess what.. they wanted to send it off for repairs.

Incidentally, I had exactly the same problem with the old one when it came to updates. I would suggest it was my PC, but since I've had 3 machines in the last year and I've had problems on all 3, I don't think that is the issue..

is it insured for accidental damage?
#10
Has it been jail broken,
#11
Yeah with the O2 Premier plan or whatever it is they sell to you with the phone.

But as usual they like to try and talk themselves out of taking any responsibility for something that they probably should.

just drop it, crack to the screen should warrant a new one - or a refurb.
#13
It's not been jailbroken or tampered with in any way - it's only been updated with the official Apple updates from iTunes.
#14
see what o2 say, but i would say this can be sorted out with a correct tutorial,
#15
I tried all the tutorials, they all start with putting it in recovery mode. Once it's in recovery mode it goes to extracting software then just flashes up with an unknown error occurred (13).. :(

Device Firmware Update mode

I've tried DFU mode too - the screen is totally blank with no backlight at first, then whilst it goes through the extracting files etc in iTunes the Apple logo comes up, then it just gives me error code 13 again

Ok, the iPhone is an amazing piece of kit, you should not be having these issues. So, do the following.

Basically, if the fauly occurred before 12 months, then you can claim on the warranty, even if you are over the 12 month period.

Go to an APPLE store and explain. They will swap the phone for you simple.

Then start enjoying the most popular phone ever!!

You sir are a genius. I tried an old iPod cable - and it seems to be working. Not sure why an iPod cable would work over the proper iPhone one though.. oh well. MANY thanks, you've saved me a trip to O2 tomorrow.

Note to self - don't do any more updates!

The nearest Apple store to me is 100 miles away - but I will make an effort to get there. Even so the problem has occurred to me on 2 phones now. I've had the issues on 2 laptops and one PC, so I don't think I can pin it on any one machine either. Plus when I search for help on the topic there are literally hundreds of threads on sites where people have exactly the same problem so I'm not really sure what to think.

When I'm near the Apple store next I'll pop in and pick some poor persons brains!

Thanks for your help guys.

Ive gone through 3 iphones, they are so complicated, these things can happen.

I travelled from South Wales to Birmingham to get to an apple store lol!! O2 stores want to do one thing and one thing only, and thats SELL!! Support doesnt come into their vocabulary!

Good luck with it.
