Should I be able to pick up "terrestrial tv" from the Virgin cable that comes into my house while I'm waiting for my freeview aerial to be installed?
Or is all that piped in on a different band/frequency or whatever?

Where I live, the whole town has been cabled.
The council don't really want every house to have an aerial on it.
They tried to stop us having satellite dishes but lost out.
So every house has a cable feed with BBC1, BBC2, ITV, CH4 and CH5 regardless of whether they subscribe or not.
Should my freeview recorder pick up on these 5 channels?

no chance - freeview comes in via the air

I would say yes, it would be able to pick up the 5 channels.

yes if you can plug in and work a standard analogue TV (ie they are piping the channels on UHF Ch's21-69).More likely these are delivered via Virgin's digital platform .In that case you need a virgin decoder box which you connect to your HDD via scart or hdmi

No you dont.

If you plug a virgin tv cable, the acual cable that comes into your house, into your tv ariel socket you will pick up some channels.

To explain further they may be amplifying the standard transmitter signal from an aerial of your building as well as piping the virgin signal. otherwise they have little ground to deny you having your own terrestrial aerial

OK, one each so far.

I can these channels from a regular tv with no extra box needed if that helps.

On that basis you will be fine..enjoy
