lol more details.....I have a 4/5 year old cockateil....not a very friendly bird at all :x never took the time to tame him up (yes him...but the title wouldnt have sounded right then)...and now I have the time to spend with him to try taming him...but how do I do it.....
...He will take food off me (through the bars) and sometimes with my hand in the cage....he bites my nails if i put them close....but breaks them :x....and if I put my flesh near him he tries to bite me...but not a viscious bite, more a 'go away' bite....and he also tried to headbut me.....any help welcomed :)

if you weren't female i would be worried by the OP

only way to get him to like you is to spend time and be gentle. Pass him food and try to gain his trust

He is psychologically toying with you - you now think he likes you but really he doesnt. He hates you. You keep him behind bars for your own pleasure. You feed him when YOU feel like it, not when he is hungry. You clean his cage when YOU can be bothered, not when he wants it done. You are evil. He is secretly plotting to peck your eyes out the minute the opportunity arises.

pmsl, having grown up with my parents having birds etc I know exactly what you mean. I used to tell my parents if the bird was happy let him out with the windowas open if he flys away then thats what he wants if he dont then he likes it here.

To be fair you're a cat thats trying to get him on your finger, he probably thinks you're gonna eat him.

My grandad used to keep racing pigeons and they took quite a long time to train. He did get them to fly to him and sit on him though.

The key to training any bird is building up trust, so take it slowly, especially at first. Don't expect to achieve everything in just one or two days. Training is a fairly slow process. Birds aren't usually the brightest of creatures.

First try putting on a leather glove and hold your hand steady in front of him, just an inch or two above perch height. Most birds prefer a higher perch so he is quite likely to step up on his own accord. If he wants to peck it will be the leather glove which takes most of the impact! The glove will also stop you from reacting quickly to a sudden peck, which will make the bird nervous.

If he's not interested, try offering a treat which he can only reach by stepping on to your hand. You can use treats to reward good behaviour. Most animals respond well to training rewards.

Don't just hold out your finger to start with. Use your fist like you see people doing with birds of prey. It makes a bigger perch area which will seem safer to the bird. Hold your fist thumb up and that should give plenty of area for the bird to grip onto and be comfortable for you to hold.

You should be able to get the bird to step back on the perch by holding your hand slightly below the perch so he wants to step up again.

Once it is happy moving on and off your hand you should be able to start slowly moving it around. Not far at first and very slowly. Just let him get used to the movement.

Over time you should be able to remove the glove and then try a single finger if you want to. Once he gets to know that you offer a "safe" perching place you will be able to control it better.

The tricky part is teaching him that pecking you is not acceptable. Hopefully you won't get pecked much if you keep your movements slow and fluid anyway. You can use rewards for good behaviour and that will help in building the trust bond between you.

Good luck!

cheers spod :) thats what I have been doing (-the leather glove) at the moment Im trying to teach him to go onto the perch that I hold....he is getting more comfortable with it now...as you said, I know its gonna take a long time, especially cos hes not a baby...but I really want to tame him...seems so sad to have a bird locked up all the time...repped :)

It does help once you know that he's much more likely to step up than down.
Birds generally like to step onto higher perches where possible. It gives them a better view of the world and that usually means a safer one.

Basically the things which motivate the bird are sex, food, safety and curiosity. They don't like being bored but safety comes very high on the agenda. You can't do much about the sex element but if you keep the other motivators in mind you should be able to get through to him! Just think like a bird! (And no, I don't mean go out and buy a pair of shoes! ...)

Take bird, bird whose natural instincts are to soar free in the skies, and imprison it in a tiny little cage all by itself so that you can admire how good it looks. Do you really expect it to like you?

I think theres a lot of men in here who agree with the title of your OP hun
