Yesterday my 6yr old boy lost his bike. The story was he put it back in the garage after using it. His best friend then decided to help himself to it, took it to our local park (just across the road from us), and left it there, it then disappeared. :o
Once we realised the bike had been stolen we started asking the neighbours if they had seen anything, one neighbour reported the local scumbag family (very renowned) little 7yr old boy had been about the estate earlier that day.
I immediately got in my car and drove to their estate (real scary part of the town). I got out my car up the street, and walked towards their house. As I came close I heard voices in the back garden, and looked over the low fence to see them, there with my boys very distinctive bright yellow bike.
I knocked on the door, and asked for my boys bike back the kid that answered immediately got his scaly mum.
She took me through to the back yard, where the bike had disappeared and all 5 kids were denying all knowledge of it. I then threatened getting the police down to talk it through with them and suddenly the bike reappeared (shoved down the back of the shed), but in the 2 hours they had it they had completely dismantled it (down to the ball bearings) and chopped the parts onto other bikes in the yard :o
After some discussions, and an irate mum that was looking at being done for possesion of stolen goods. I agreed that I would not press charges if I got a working bike back. All 5 kids immediately sprung into action to chop shop a new bike together for my boy.
After realising they didn't have enough parts, the dad (that had returned by this time) agreed to compensate me for a new bike.
I would not have believed it. I came away with cash for a new bike, and advised the police that turned up that I would not be pressing charges.
My boy seems quite happy with the outcome too :-)
