I can't run it in safe mode...how do I do it? It gives me two options on the screen...run windows normally and run windows in 'oh boo I've pooed it up' mode...which doesn't actually fix anything or work.
#5
if you back up now , your run the risk of taking the virus with you
#6
Do you have a windows disc?

Do you have a windows disc?

Perhaps...I will look.

lulz.

So you are backing up the virus?
#9
You should be ok to back up music and photos.

We will come to that bit later.

Have you got a disc or not:p
#10
do you not have the photo's on your camera still
#11
how many photos? ive taken now to uploading my photos to my ovi account so i never need worry about them being lost. are you able to upload those? other than that there is no telling where bits of the virus is hiding.
If you have the windows disc, you can boot from that and go into repair mode or something, but would prob be best by the sounds of it to reinstall it.
To get into safe mode usually requires the need to press F8 or similar at boot to get into the selection screen, or if you just cut power instead of turning it off, when it starts it should prompt you to go into safe mode.

Lots and lots of photos. I can't be doing with uploading them to be honest, a lot of them are on facebook so if I really have to lose them then I guess I'll just do that. Half of them are on a disc from my old laptop so I won't lose all of them but I'd be sad to lose the rest.

What am I doing with this windows disc exactly?!

try getting the laptop into safe mode first, you might be able to avoid reinstalling. what pc is it?

What virus is it ? Try SuperAntiSpyware, it should run. I had one the other day, it wouldn't let me install malwarebytes either, SuperAntiSpyware worked though.

It's a Dell Inspiron 1545.

Hmm, ok thank you.

Keep tapping F8 on bootup to get into Safemode.
#19
Back up all the music and photos (ahem) etc and when you've done that just put the disc in and reboot.

Do you have a serial number sticker on your PC

What sort of drive are you backing up onto?

Anyone ever noticed how people around here seem to have some sort of a vested interest in everyone else having as bad a time of it as possible? AF, no, you're not nearly as srewed as these guys are making out that you are, and whatever's wrong with your PC, your photos are in no danger. I'll turn my actual trained professional skillz to this thread later on if no-one else helps you properly, but for the time being, Shane seems pretty much on the money, so listen to him and him only.
#21
my cousin has a dell 1525, had a similar problem, virus wouldnt let him do anything, eventually got into safe mode and malwarebytes took care of the problem after that.

you want to see this screen, ignore the highlighted option, you want the safe mode with networking, so you can download malwarebytes.

No I don't have a sticker. I've got a Dell reinstallation disc for Vista.

Oh schwoops, sorry!

I'll try this and resort to iphoning.

If it's one of those rougue/fake antivirus programs it's likely to cause problems in Safe Mode too anyway.

Try that and then try malwarebytes in safe mode
#32
the laptop should go into safe mode, F8 or F12 sometimes. let us know how you get on, restart, and just start tapping f8 first till that menu appears
banned#33
If its xp then you're computer is probably f*cked and you'll have to do a complete format of the drive. If its just photos your worried about just upload them to photobucket or somewhere else. Don't put any pen drives in your computer, because it'll probably infect them too. If you have a windows repair disk it could sort the problem. Depending on the severity of your virus, although it seems like it is, safe mode won't do anything
#34
I'm in safe mode with networking now and the virus is still happily going about it's business of annoying me and wanting me to throw the laptop across the room.

AF one time offer, If you can't get it fixed by tomorrow night, I am more than willing to pop round with my trusty laptop and fix it for you.

I can't get out of the town so would need to live within the town (e.g. not cerney wick, north cerney etc).

Just pm me if you want me to do this.
