Im sick of working in a chip shop getting all kinds of abuse, although i can handle it alright im just a bit sick of it. anyway, i have pretty much no quals, apart from GCSE's for math, english, science, french, design, geog, childcare at D-F which aint good and a GNVQ in business. PLus 2 years experience, in sales, etc working in the chippy....

anyone got any advice???

I like office work, cos i know computers and i like working on them. Ive got a full uk licence and a car and like driving...can talk on the telephone well.

ive looked at the jobcentre website and there is nowt...its so depressing.

Have you looked on fish4jobs?

put in your postcode and how far you are willing to travel, should hopefully bring up a few options for you.
Maybe look at working in retail, like mobile phone outlets as you have an interest in technology(and phones!!) and you have lots of customer service experience.Wander down the high st and ask in mobile retailers shops to see if they are looking for staff.

Have you looked at doing the ECDL?with your computer knowledge you could possibly fly through the course and this would give you something very good to put on your CV if you are wanting office based work.

Just a few ideas to look at and to keep your spirits up:)

not having a go or taking the mick - do chipshop people get much grief?

i once got thrown out of my local chippy, i had had a few pints and they had no chips left(nearly closing) so my mate had a sausage cob and they only had a piece of fisah left - so i fancied it in a cob myself - i asked her if the fish was moist - and she asked me to leave!!

seriously try a site such as jobserve or total jobs - and look for a job in entry level it support

(ps mucky pup - was the FISH4jobs bit a pun)

ill have a look round the mobile shops, tho theres always about 10 staff and 0 customers so i doubt it lol

whats the ECDL?? and where do i do it? ans how much? my CV is rubbish. i did nothing from 2001 to 2005 cos i was ill...i did an advanced IT course but left 2 months b4 the end cos i got ill and i had lagged behind in the database module...so i gave up...

I dunno in general chipshop ppl getting abuse...but i certainly do...every friday and saturday night without fail i have to throw someone out. Because im a laydee...men think they can talk **** to me...and i dont take it... plus we have machines with 5a jackpot so kids are in and out and cause a lot of trouble...its amazing how many ppl give abuse really. and ive had 100's of arguments cos a lot of ppl know im a lesbian in my city and i get ppl talking about me and saying stuff...and i refuse to take it..lol...i come from the north east originally and im more than used to having a barny...the schools i went to were really bad for fights ad bullying...

anyway total babbling there.........

i only really knew about jobcentre lol will try others

I thought tazandsaz was a bloke once on here and had to apologise profusely. I worked in a pub when I was younger and that was some grief so I suppose after a few beers the drunks move onto the chippies so I can see where you're coming from.

I recommend fish4jobs to look for vacancies. If you're going to use Monster then you get a lot of cold calling from recruitment agencies saying they've found you the perfect job but haven't got a clue what you do. If that doesn't bother you then go for it.

I've always found the local papers to be the best efforts.
#20
thanks everyone...ill try everywhere probably lol...the job aint actually that bad and i get on with all the staff...its mainly the late 3.30am finishes that do me like... and the abuse...
#21
Thursday is Jobs night in my local paper The Yorkshire evening post, try your local paper.

Also there are lots of agencies around that will find you a permenant job with good pay, so far in the last 5 years i have had 3 good jobs found for me through an agency.

Ask to have your shifts changed, work the day shifts instead. I hope it all works out for you!

You sound like you have had lots of experience and have some good qualifications. I suppose you just need to find something that you will really enjoy.
#23
thanks becky, it may be jobs night in my paper, i never buy it but its worth a go. and i cant change my shifts cos its the night times we are short on, they are trying to get someone new to help with the late nights as its gonna get busier, so without me doing the weekend nights its pretty much half my wages lol and all the days are covered...noone wants to do the late nights.

i wouldnt really say i have good quals..just a gnvq and crap gcse's lol.. if id finished my IT course id have finished uni by now...*sigh*

ive been thinking about doing the MCSE courses as u can learn at home and take the tests at a training office place, and my unckle has done them all and has the books to loan me. i just dont know if i want an IT career, im good at a lot of it but i just get sick of it..lol....

i really wanted to have my own business.....but without the cash im nackerd...

maybe i should do some sort of management course? ive no experience it management tho......and im 26....getting on a bit now lol
#24
lol nearly as old as me,

I have posted this before in the freebie section but have you tried www.vision2learn.com they are free online courses run by your local college. There are lots of work based courses like team leader nvq ect. I am on my second course now, they are not bad for free.
#25
If you are looking at getting into management why not look to the supermarkets. You can start off in a shop floor role and they usually have training schemes for management that you can work your way up.

Asda certainly do this and I would imagine that all the others do also.

If you want to earn extra money whilst there you can try and get on the night shifts if you don't mind them, get paid time +1/3....and there is double time on sundays.

Your quals are more than enough to get you in,if you show aptitude and a willingness for hard work management training should come your way.

ps....26 is NOT getting on a bit!!!!
#26
If you have some free time then I suggest you do some volunteer work such as working in your local charity shop or something. They benefit from an extra pair of hands and you benefit because it will make you feel good and looks great on a CV.

BTW, I knew you were female - remember you saying about Emma making the avvie more girly for you :)
#27
BECKYBOO - thanks ill have a look

muckypup - by getting on a bit i just mean to stay in a chip shop lol...i certainly dont feel old......and i think ill look into asda and tesco...i hate nightshift but i probably wouldnt mind it in that sort of job as its quieter, unlike the chippi its busier......thanks for the advice im deffo gonna have a think and maybe talk to someone

kelly_o_fanatic - i tried the charity shops b4 as a delivery driver but there was nothing and i dont really have spare time in the day cos i work already.. ill keep my eyes peeled tho lol....thanks for the advice

I went for management at Tesco, didn't get any support so gave up on it. I spose it depends who you are working with.

did u have any quals or experience?
#30
The only qualifications I have are City & Guilds in Microsoft packages. Basically, how they work. Where I am working now, its more of how to fix problems than how the progs work.

The company I work for probably felt sorry for me and gave me a job! lol:?

I spose if you get an interview, just say to them you are keen to learn new things, and enjoy workign with people, technology etc.

Hey Taz you just have to keep looking and something will come along. I only have GCSE's and now I am a PA for an installation company. Still only have GCSE's and thats it! But am studying now though, its always good to have something under your belt (paper wise) makes it easier to find a job that you want and have more options.

Check out direct.gov.uk they might be able to help with with career advice as well if you want.
