I really hate my doctor's

Just spent 45 mins on hold trying to book an appointment at my docs (surgery opens at 8.45). I get to the front of the queue and i am told there are no appointments left for today, so i have to ring back tomorrow at 8.45 and try again. I was then told i can't pre book any appointment for another day. So basically i have to start ringing at 8.45 and hope that by the time its my turn, they have an appointment left. I just need a moan really, but what sort of stupid system is that? Anyone else's doctors do this?

Sounds a bit like my doctors. Dread being ill, usually suffer and try to avoid.
I get high blood pressure just trying to book.
You are not in Newport by any chance are you. lol:whistling:

yep
we can book in advance so many appointments but then they hold a lot back for on the days and if you dont get through in a 15minute slot you've had it.

if i ever need a doc for my kids i will take it further as i think its stupid.

have you got a walk in centre?

If you are really unwell you can usually insist to see a doctor on the day. It will not be at the time of your choice though.

Phone them back and tell them you need a house call, they will soon fit you in :)

Never failed to get one here (Dunfermline). Phone up @ 8am and always manage to get one the same day.

I asked for the appointment, they said they didn't have any. i explained i think i have an ear infection as my ear is killing so could you at least get a prescription ready for antibiotics, they said no. I may just turn up and say i will sit here til you fit me in.

actually may try asking for a home visit. sounds like a good idea. i bet they ask if i could get there in the next 30 mins or something.

Same with my doctors. You have to keep phoning from 8 in the morning with every one else in the area, theres no hold, so its always engaged. You have to phone the right split second to get through to them, usually takes at least 10 minutes and by then all the good appointments are gone. or there are none completely. Some people queue from 7:30 to try get a decent time. Really bad system, maybe they could spend a couple of billion on improving it

Yes at mine you have to ring at 8:30am (excellent as its just as I'm walking the kids to school!) and ring and ring until you get through as its always engaged at that time, obviously. If you get through within half an hour to an hour of trying you usually get a space that day. If not you can't and ring next day. I work part time so as you can imagine I avoid bothering unless really urgent.

Trouble is doctor's surgery's are overstretched with people with genuine need and those who go see a doctor for anything. Also those who make appointments and don't keep them, although I think that's improving now they threaten to remove from list if done too much.

Most working people want to see a doctor after work, parents want after school usually so some slots are practically never available.

I'm afraid it is the NHS and we have to be grateful that we have a system 'on demand'. The only way you're ever going to get better is if you pay (through the nose).

Its annoying but I'm glad we have the NHS myself.

With my National Insurance contributions I am paying through the nose... I'd rather opt out and go private!

We have no problem getting our son in at our very busy GPs. They normally fit a child in if the parent pushes it.
Saying that, I don't actually like our Doctor that much. You actually have to ask him what's wrong after he's heard your symptoms and checked you out otherwise he'll just start printing out a prescription and have you on your way.

No trouble at my village doctors, if there isn't an appointment today there'll be one tomorrow probably, bookable in advance. It's a 4 mile drive to get there though. On the money some doctors are paid nowadays you'd think they could work an hour longer or hire help. I changed to another doctors a few years ago, the last one inherited the practice from a retiring doctor, he was horrible, told lies, probably would have killed me in time. Eg "calcium tablets aren't available on the NHS even though you have osteopaena" False.

i phoned my doctors this morning. to go in for 11.45am today. can usually be seen same day if required, couple weeks ago i actually got a proper appointment the day i phoned too :)

Same here in East London

They wont pick up the phone until 8.30 and then it is constantly engaged - if you don't get through in 10 minutes then you aren't getting seen that day, will have to try again tomorrow - I think it's disgusting

Did anyone see on Question Time a couple of years ago - Tony Blair was going on about the GP service and how they had managed to vastly reduce the waiting times to see a GP and most people get seen within 24 hours of asking for an appointment. A member of the audience pointed out to him that this is because the GP's will now only let you book for the same day and he was genuinely surprised, he didn't have a clue that this was happening :w00t:

Are you in North Manchester?

I can book in advance but it's usually 7 days till you can get an appointment. They do offer emergency appointments on the day but you only get 5 minutes with the doctor.

I suppose your system makes sense as it stops the no shows, usually 7 days means the cold has gone

Can't you just go to the doctors first thing though and just show up to make your appointment then.

i imagine this saves alot of wasted appointments, that really arent needed, so many people waste doctors time with pathetic ailments, we have seen how many people visit their gp just for a prescription, so those are the ones to blame

i am not talking about repeat prescription, i am talking about people who only go because they want free medication, you know parents who want a bottle of calpol, or people who want a prescription for some brufen, etc, etc, you know, the ones who are so ill they can only get to gp between certain ours because of work, etc,etc

Our surgery is so difficult - we have 5 doctors and one of them is so much better than the others. You have to book a MONTH before to get an appointment because everyone books her which means you can never get to see her for an urgent condition just for chronic conditions which are being monitored.
The others give you no confdence in their ability - thats why so many people ask questions on this site, because their GPs don't care or fob them off with useless comments that are no help.
You can though get an emergency appointment on the same day. But it's always with the guy who is useless because no one wants an appointment with him. We call him Dr Hopeless because thats what he is.
