Bid on a puter this morning and got out bid. Winner has pulled out and I received a second chance offer. You tech heads think it's worth £200? Thanks.

Very old technology. About 3 generations behind, originally released approx 2004. Not sure it is worth the cash to be honest, as you could get a basic current gen machine for only a few pounds more

The specs says 3gb memory not 4gb as per title.

Yes,I seen that...If it was 4GB I thought although not new technology, that it would still be ok. I don't play games anymore and I'm currently using a Dimension P4-2.8Ghz with 1GB of ram,and it does most things. I even edited some camcorder footage with it,so I thought the extra Ram would mean that this would be faster?

I think 200 pounds is a waste of money to get a P4 3Ghz machine when you have a 2.8Ghz machine already - it's easy enough to buy and add some ram to your existing machine. Given how low PC base stations are going for these days I would put your money towards a Core 2 Duo machine which will give a far more noticeable performance improvement thanks to the more powerful processor and the fact it's dual core (two processors basically)

Why don't you just upgrade your RAM to 4gb instead of buying a machine that has similar specs to the one you got?

Just so long as you realise that the person who outbid you on the other one is, shall we say, a 'regular' customer.

I think it is 4GB. What happens is, Vista (and XP) can't address 4GB of memory, so if you put 4GB of memory in a Vista machine, it only shows there being 3326MB.

If it were only 3GB, then that should read 3072MB.

Cool I didn't know that!

Thanks for your replies. I agree Shengis "regular" customer. That's the thing with Ebay...I might say to him that I will give him what the bid was at before the "regular" Ebayer bid! - Takes it down to £116! Now it is defo worth that  But someone else did come in at £167...I hear what your saying about the Ram. But Dell ram is expensive! What is it again on mine. 180 NON-EEC. Last time I bought a gig it was about £60! A few years ago right enough, lol  Wonder if it comes with the Vista disk. Sell the monitor for about £50,would work out about the same for 4 GB and Vista probably...

It may not be, but how many PC's does one person need?

As for old technology, I was feeling a bit melancholy and bought a Dreamcast today!! WTF. I think it's still 1989 so that would make the DC new technology to me,lol. Just fancied House of the dead 2 and the gun,and I'm going to get all the Resident Evil games and go through them again...Anyone else still play a DC?

Deleting the ebay link in the op now..
#14
Why delete? Are you not allowed to branch out in to other topics on a thread?
#15
Not allowed ebay links, the 'top' post of the thread bypasses the usual automatic rules.

Have you looked at some of the Dell deals here at all? I think for a little more you could get a machine which would genuinely be a substantial upgrade for you.

Hi John
I did go on the Dell outlet site that was posted. I must admit for £200 or so (after discount) you were getting a better spec system. No monitor, and don't think you were getting 4GB ram for that price, but maybe twice the processing power and 2 GB it would be faster anyway...Might click on it later tonight as I think they update a lot,so might get a great deal! Someone said he got one for about £153 delivered,so there are bargains to be had :)

Loads and loads!

Ive got 8 here that are used every day! (Plus 4 half decent ones that are never powered up collecting dust!)

Mind you - of those 8 one is a lappy the missus uses and 2 desktops the kids use in their rooms.
