I am 23 weeks pregnant with my second pregnancy and it has been anything but normal and every week another problem crops up!

This weeks problem: Even though i have lost a stone since becoming pregnant i look like a beached whale :?
My fundal height is measuring at 33cm; 10 weeks more than i should be! I measured from the top of the pubic bone to the top of the my uterus so i did it right.

Really need to see the midwife but i dont want to bother her now as she will want to get home so will have to wait until monday.
My first son was 8lb 2oz and i had 3rd degree tears so i am hoping his one is no bigger but its not looking good is it ;-)

Anyone on here had a similar problem when pregnant!?

I've never measured myself or had the midwife measure my belly, they just felt my bumps and always felt that I'm right about size for right weeks and so on.When there been students in and they like to practice on you they always got my week right too and they no idea how far along I've been.If you got some extra pounds like me maybe you would measure up more,I know I def would and in this case the most accurate way would be by a midwife checking you 1st and then if there was any concern you would go in for a scan.I guess you had a scan at 20-21 weeks so if that was in normal size there not a lot to worry about.
If you concerned at all pop along to you nearest hospital to get seen on maternity or call up and ask if you can have a visit at home.
I lost a lot of weight about stone and half when I was pregnant 1st time round,it starting going on about 5 mths along.
My children son 1st he was 6lb 9oz he was pretty skinny,I did have a scan with him about a week or so b4 he was born and they said he was a bit thin round the abdomen area but fairly long and my daughter was 6lb 2oz she had plenty of the baby fat on her but was quite short, she was in tiny baby clothes for about a mth and they were turned up a bit at sleeves etc, even now she rather delicate and petite in size.
Supposedly you meant to have a baby that your body accomodates and you can give birth to ok but don't know why a lot of women do experience bad tearing,I had a tiny tear with my 1st but midwife said it wasn't too bad and should heal ok without repair, and my 2nd time round was hardly a tear at all but she was small weight but did look fatter than the 1st one.

... had 3rd degree tears ...

I'm glad I am a man - that brought tears to my eyes and an involuntary crossing of the legs:? Still, can't be that bad as my wife wanted several children ... runs and ducks for cover ...;-)

Is it the midwife that has measured you or yourself?

Just read that you did it yourself- I would't trust myself doing that - My midwife didnt start measuring me till my 28 week appointment, but if your worried call your midwife.

I actually am 30 weeks pregnant and have a small bump i lost half a stone early on but my baby is exactly the right size.

Yikes! Sounds painful

As someone else said, don't worry too much about measurements you've done yourself. Your mw will measure you properly, and if you are really that big, refer you for an extra scan. It's most likely that as this is your 2nd, your muscles have expanded nicely to make lots of room for the growing bump - nothing to worry about. The growth scan is what counts.

For what it's worth, my little one was 8lb 15oz, and I only had a small tear. She was quite long and thin - the best way to be ! So heavy baby doesn't necessarily = lots of tearing.

If I were you, I'd mentiopn your concerns to your friendly mw - if she's a good 'un, she'll refer you for an extra scan to put your mind at rest.

Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy

Goes on when you push too, they tell you when to push at times,I had to be told to when with my 1st cos I had an epidural and it was starting to wear off and they wouldn't top it up anymore but I was still fairly numb on 1 side,I was exhausted too cos he took ages to have and it was hard going from when labour started really.
2nd time round much easier and I didn't need to be told what to do,I had to be told not to push as she had to break my waters when my daughter was coming down, she had a little mark on her head when she was born from the scissors, waters were broken 2 mins before she was born to be exact.
Think it also goes on how quick the baby born, like once the head out its not a good idea for the shoulders to come out too quickly cos thats how you can get a bad tear,I also remember 2nd time the midwife put some ky jelly or something similar down there too that may help too.
You can also massage down there later on in pregnancy and it supposed to help, theres oil you can buy to massage into the area.

I did it myself, my Midwife said she will measure me at 24 weeks (next week) but i was curious! She did have a feel of my stomach last week as i was having pains and said he was a big baby. My doctor would prefer me to have a c-section due to problems in the pregnancy so perhaps i might chicken out and have one.

My 1st was back to back,it can be a slow labour,I was bad from start cos he was back to back that was the reason I was vomiting from start,I must been sick more than a dozen times, with the pain and I was barely 3 cm when midwife said you have to go into hospital and recommended me an epidural too. If you not mobile, the baby head isn't on the cervix as much and so it dilates slower, and even more so if the baby is back to back I reckon.I was lucky my son actually turned during labour later on so he come out me not very much damage.
I agree,if the next one is in any odd positions you should have a C Section. You may find this time round tho its normal head down like my 2nd time was.
If my baby was back to back again,I be requesting a C Section.

Lmfao, they told my sister the same.

She gave birth to a 10lber!

She spent so much money on small baby clothes, and he was massive. Just great aye.

I wouldn't be to concerened by your measurements as you might just have mis measured slightly, no offence the midwifes are the one's who know exactly where to be measure.
I'm now 28 weeks and am measuring 30 so not a huge difference but I discussed it with the midwife because they are concerned that the date's might be wrong(or the baby is big) they will monitor and if they become concerned then they will send for a scan.

PMSL :p

I keep having the same dream that I end up giving birth whilst watching my son playing footie in the middle of the pitch, in front of everyone. That is my idea of a nightmare!

I would put up with the embarrassment if it only lasted 49 minutes though!

I take ages from start to finish,I get off to a slow start for sure then picks up a bit near the end.
2nd time round I woke up about 4am and knew the contractions had started so went back to sleep.I got up about 9am,still having contractions, went on all morning, then afternoon came and had a show and it was bit more blood wise than I had with my 1st and my Mum who was over said it looked heavy so I called up hospital and they said yeh you need go over to main hospital, and specially so cos I been having contractions and they didn't like the sound of my show mucus plug thingy.Got over there around 4pm by taxi 18miles journey it is but paid for by Sure Start ( I going do a post about Sure Start soon and how it can benefit families living in the sure Start areas for those who don't know ) and after them doing an internal seeing my loss,I was told I was 3cm dilated and they said I wasn't even in labour according to the monitors they put on my bump aswell to check baby's heartbeat.Said my cervix was probably 3cm anyway as I already had 1 baby.So sent all way back home, this time we got back on patient transport provided by the hospital.Time we got home after waiting for public transport to be put on it was getting on for 6pm,I still thought I was def in labour so I spent a lot of time in the bath. I used to watch Taken which I think started at 9pm and my partner asked me if I as going get out the bath and come watch it,I said hell no,he always asks me stupid questions when I'm in labour lol,he was shouting up Who wants to be a Millionaire questions to me too that night.Anyway I was getting more uncomfortable so I called up local maternity unit,to see if a midwife come round to check my progress and they like on the phone oh you sound really far along,so I said can come into the birthing unit and they like oh no not after the heavy show etc and plus I sounded to far along for them at this point so got told to get back over. This time cos we used our taxi ride,we went over by ambulance and I barely could sit down and the ambulance people were trying get me to sit down and I'm like hopping all over.
Once getting to hospital, they just about to get me into a room and then they realise the ambulance have forgotten to give them my notes. It must been about 10.30pm time I got on the bed,yeh my partner undressed me and helped me on with a nightie cos I was so uncomfortable.I asked if I could have any pethidene or however it spelt, and they said you need wait now and see but the drs r in doing a C-Section at moment ( was Saturday night, you know how they work short staffed at times ) and midwife decided I could have some of the gas & air stuff but that doesn't really work, this was about 11pm,and then she wanted to examine me but I couldn't let her cos I just wanted to be let be by this point. Next thing I know I want a poo and they wanted me up but I couldn't get off the bed and they get me a bowl, and I can't even get my bum up to try and go in so yes I just go there, cos I'm not sure if its that going come out of baby coming down and I'm all confused, anyway next thing I know I'm def saying yeh the baby going be born and the midwife gets some scissors and breaks my waters, and then she dims the lights and my daughter born 2 mins laer,as I said before she had a lil scratch mark off the scissors cos she must been some way down when they broke my waters,so yeh all went quickly towards end.

GooOoO Macdoona I hear this time you are aiming for the carpark!

Was terrified all through my first pregnancy by a midwife that kept saying wow this baby is HUGE!! At least 9lb .... Ended up baby was 8lb and freaking hard to get shifted!.

The next baby was meant to be a tiny little spec ... and appeared 2 weeks early at the chubbiest 8lb4 your ever saw.

Mentally first kid I went in there with the mind set I am never gonna get this thing out!!! She got stuck for hours ... with my second I was preparing to give birth to an ant. I remember thinking jeez if I managed first time around this should not be half as difficult. Stop being so feeble And push girl ... and out she popped!

Positive mindset does wonders!

please dont worry!

my first was 9lb.5oz, boy

second was 9lb.13oz boy

third was 8lb.3oz girl

fourth was 8lb.2oz girl

but i will say the boys wernt easy but this was a while ago, and they are much better now if worried off size,

when i had my third was sitting in rocking chair in labour suite, having cuppa and toast, hubby next to me reading paper, when i said shes coming, never made the bed and blees here was sitting on my babys head.

but last one they done a c section at 38weeks but that was due to her getting any bigger and i also have medical conditions and was on crutches so thought it best all way round, but i hated it after three normal deliveries found this very hard.

but if worried about size always talk to your midwife.

also ment to say i had to be cut with all my three but they do day its better than tearing, but just so painful once anthseitic wears off.

but after saying this i LOVE giving birth, even though i had big babies, just hated being pregnant as so sick all 9months.

but good luck and try and enjoy pregnanacy.

This thread is getting a bit gruesome  I used to work in Health Care (Qualified Nursery Nurse and Nurse) and can deal with most things but some of these posts are making me cringe and cross my legs! I know what to expect this time around so it makes it that much worse!

Is there not an easy way for the baby to come out!? I only had gas and air last time, perhaps ill try something a bit stronger this time. I was in labour for 23 hours and did go through 2 and 1/2 canisters of gas and air (with my hubbys help!) i didnt think it worked at first!

Haven't you give birth yet? :whistling:

You can have pethidine but I don't know if it works, and they won't give it to you near the end or don't like to cos it makes the baby drowsy to near the end,I was refused it anyway with my 2nd one as it was too near the end.
Episdurals are very good cos you don't feel anything but I had 1 first time round and I would prefer to avoid them again. When they do wear off it hits you,the contractiosn cos all of a sudden you haven't got no pain then you have, least when you start with the pain you can build up with the contractions.Plus I had to have a catheter in and my urine output was no good and I had a catheter stuck in me for 2 days and then I got a urinary tract infection probably due to having that in me.I couldn't come home but had to be transffered to the local hospital and everytime I had a wee I had to take the jug to the midwives on to show how much I been and they were noting it down.If my urine output didn't improve I have been sent back over to main hospital.
C-Section seems easy option but then you got the hassle of the scar and the risks of that outweighs giving birth normally I think.there just isn't really an easy way for it.I want another baby badly so will just put up with it lol, either way I choose to go with it.
#35
i found with c section, the pain after, took me a whild to get back to normal, but with my others back to normal nigh on straight away.

but i will say, but dont quote me on this , that the bigger the baby the easier it is to give birth, as little ones are a bit lazy.

but that is what my midwife told me, and it was a while ago, and maybe she was just sweet talking me. :giggle:

but what ever happens when you give birth, nothing can take that feeling away from you when you first hold your new baby.
a wonderful feeling!!! and i would go through anything just to have my children.
