Am doing a virus scan at the mo but it hasn't found anything yet.

Any idea what else I can do?
Any help would be much appreciated as my daughter doesn't like me using her lappy.

See what the scan says when its finished, also run a spyware scan.

Run a spyware scanner as well like Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D.

What makes you think it's a virus?

What anti-viurs do you have? If I were you I would get AVAST and run a boot scan and quarentine any files it finds

also spybot/any anti spyware scans may help

Turn off "System Restore" then do a re-scan, as it could be hidden in that area

have Mcafee.
I keep getting various things pop up. and the bar at the bottom has dissappeared.

Maybe worth running a scan in safe mode and unplugging from net until resolved

+1 on turning of updates for now, sometimes they are hidden in system files

If it's fake popups saying things like 'virus detected' but not from your actual virus checker then yes you have.

Press ctrl + alt + del to see if task manager pops up or if it has been disabled as this happened to my bro. If you manage to get it sorted then install firefox with 'noscript' so you don't pick up any further nasties from bad websites (some banner ads and stuff can be infected).

Does sound like you could have a virus, or maybe spyware. download malwarebytes, install and update. make sure your antivirus is up to date. update windows . then reboot into safe mode and run scans with both. clean off anything it finds, then reboot. flush out your system restore (switch it off) re scan just to make sure you're clean then switch restore back on.

edit: isn't mcafee rubbish anyway? I'd think about switching to AVG free, or AVAST free.

I got a big flashing window saying i had a virus the other day and must act straight away. Ran my Norton scan and nothing came up!! Sometimes its just websites trying to sell you anti virus software-dont fall for it!

One to watch out for at the moment is if you get a pop up asking ypu to download VirusScan 2009, horrible thing, had a few cases on machines!!

Yep, I've had a couple of friends bring me their laptops recently infected with that beast. Nightmare to clean, but thankfully can be done.

Run.

Run to the hills.

Is your anti-virus software up-to-date? Must always make sure this is the case - then run a scan.

Firstly go to Trend Micro and do an online virus scan here Also if your McAfee subscription is about to expire (and I had this before with Norton) you seem to get frequent alerts that a virus has been detected. I'm convinced it was the software itself trying to make sure you renewed your subscription by frightening you. Anyway after Trend Micro's scan, install Spybot Search and Destroy; update it once installed, then run it, then run it's Immunise option. I would then change to Avast. PM me if you want any help.

yeah, malwarebytes is good, that's why I told OP to get it :)

I also used combofix and superantispyware to clean those laptops. did the trick in the end.
