What did you lose?

The good news is, there are plenty of sites with women defecating on each other, so you'll be able to download again.

Seriously though, I once saved over a piece of college work I had spent days on. That made me back-up every precious piece of work three times from then on; once on my hard drive, once on a removable drive and once by sending a copy to my e-mail.

to everyone who has said theyre going to do it soon or tomorrow, PLEASE DO IT, its a horrible thing to happen to someone :\ had all my bank details on it (i know thats stupid but i miseed some of the key details out and they were in different documents) also had all my photos and videos + music and most important my work documents :\, so i advice all of you to geton wth it now and do it, if you dont have a external HDD, )which i dont, but am now buyng due to this) just back up important files onto a few DVDs as data discs.

:)

I don't understand, how do you back things up anyway, save to a disc? Do you have to do it document by document or is there an easier way of doing it? I have one of those mini pencil type flash drives is that what you mean by backing up, putting the document on there as well? Every document and picture? Dumb or what? I am blonde if that explains things a bit better.

>I HAVE JUST LOST ALL MINE THANKS TO MY PC

How do you know you have lost everthing?

If the PC or laptop was stolen then I can see that being the case, or if the hard disk in the PC or laptop crashed that could also be the case.

But if the PC or laptop was just "broken" or you got say a virus, then the files are probably still on your hard disk and can easily be recovered.

When a friends PC broke I bought an EMPTY external hard disk enclosure from PC World and put her hard disk in there.

I plugged it into my PC and was able to get all the files off it for her.

Can you tell us how you lost all your files?
.

By the way, I agree with you about backing up your files.

We have 4 PCs in our house that five family members use, and I spend ages making sure all our files are backed up.

For those that never back up here are some suggestions:

1) If you have 2 PCs or laptops in your house, copy all important files to BOTH PCs or laptops. That way if one is lost or crashes you still have the other.

2) Buy a USB memory stick. These are VERY cheap nowadays. I bought a 4Gb one in W H Smiths the others day for about 8 pounds. Copy important files to your memory stick and keep it locked away safe. (In fact with the low cost of memory sticks you can buy half a dozen and keep multiple copies of your important files).

3) Buy an external hard disk. Copy important files on there. This is not totally reliable as external hard disks can be dropped and will not work, but having copies of files on there is one sort of backup.

4) Some companies offer "online" backup where you copy your important files to a web site. This can often be free, or at least at a small cost.

5) Most PCs or laptops have a CD or DVD writer. Put all your important files into one directory on your PC, then copy that directory to a CD or DVD (or multiple CDs or DVDs).

I have all my digital photos backed up to CD and DVD (2 copies of each) PLUS they are on my external drive, PLUS spare copies on each of my PCs. No chance of me losing them.

As a general rule YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TOO MANY BACKUPS.

BACKUP EVERYTHING, MAKE BACKUPS OF YOUR BACKUPS, AND MAYBE EVEN KEEP BACKUPS AT A FRIENDS OR RELATVIES HOUSE "JUST IN CASE".

As some have mentioned just to bang home what they are saying.

HOW DID YOU LOSE THE DATA?

You can recover everything even after a format, but if you've installed over the top you may have corrupted some of the files now.

Hello everyone, Just to clear up how i actually lost all my files...

When i log into my computer it takes about 3mins on the welcome screen then once its loaded it loads onto a different background and different shortcuts, also some of my programs dont work such as Chrome, this is really frustating :@ :(, but after this i could still access documents by going thru to computer/c/user/james then i had them there altho the day later the all just dissapeared :(, now where it say C drive it says i have 180GB free out of a possible 225GB so surely thats all my files gone as it was something like, 120GB free before, it all my work and everything so its reallly annoying :(

Cheers everyone, and good luck with backing your files up

probably logging on as a different user

try LOGGING OFF and see what user accounts are shown to log back on to

Have you done a FULL search for a file you know is missing?

karenware is a great utility although I prefer Seagate Freeagent Tool (just plug my external drive in and it auto backs up any new / amended files since my last backup). Takes about 1 minute to run each time I plug it in so just do it weekly.

There is. But, before we get into that, can you log in here from another computer? Your files are likely to still be on your machine, but the little sectors of disk that they occupy are marked as okay to write over. This means that they can be recovered, but not if you write anything to disk, as it might permanently overwrite them, so you need to stop using your system ASAP and move to another.

Three days shouldn't be too bad. I've got to run off out myself right now, but if no-one else has picked up on this (John?), I'll be back at about 11-ish and I'll talk you through things then. You've absolutely got to ove to another system asap though, seriously. Every file written to disk now could be an irreplacable photograph corrupted.
