I've got the virus.......

My laptop got hit with a virus the other week and its really starting to annoy me. I'm not sure what virus it has.

It keeps closing down my anti virus, as well as taking me to random sites every now and then and it has recently stopped my dvd drive from working. It won't even let me do a system scan or defrag.

Any idead what it is and how to get rid?

Download HiJackThis:http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis

Install it and generate a log file, then head over to www.techmonkeys.co.uk and post the log file there with an explanation of what the problem is. One of the malware experts will guide you through getting of the issue's and protecting against it in the future.

I had exactly the same problem - downloaded some tools via the Major Geeks forum (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/index.php) and laptop now running like a dream. Only problem was that the virus/trojan prevented me from accessing the internet despite saying I'm connected to my wireless network - still can't connect, any ideas?

Will add rep for any useful suggestions

Best bet is to download avast antivirus (www.avast.com) and when you install it it asks for a boot scan to be done and restarts your system. It then scans your system before windows kicks in and hopefully should get the bug before it loads.

Or the other solution is to use bitdefenders online scanner (www.bitdefender.com) and run that. Very good free scanner but may take some time to scan and you need to access it using internet explorer and allow for a pop up to install the scanner.

Both of these are free

Hope this helps

I'm using AVG and it hasn't picked up anything since installing and using those various programmes.

Not an IT expert () so not quite sure what to look out for - but I can't even directly connect to my router via a cable.

Aber have a look at my HiJackThis related instructions above.

Techmonkeys specialises in Virus removal and it is all entirely free. Also unlike just an AV program they will check you machine over fully for any remnants left laying about and make sure your entirely clean.

Thanks! I've definitely downloaded HiJackThis but don't think I've used it. That Techmonkeys site looks promising - I'm hoping it's something super simple as everything else now runs super smooth (it previously crashed on start up, shut down during virus scan, pop ups appearing left right and centre and had some nasty Real AV programme installed and splashed everywhere). Repped

I also have AVG and it didn't detect it and seems to keep closing down the watchdog.

Cheers all I'm just in work the now so will give everything a try tonight and let you know which one does the job

What ever you do, don't mess with Hijackthis yourself, only check and fix things you are told to by someone who knows what they are doing. You can do a lot of damage if you just start messing with it.

you never get rid of these viruses properly with programs, i always found that i had to wipe the drive and start over, but with the amount of programs and things i had it would take me 2 days. Used to happen about once a year. Last time i installeed acronis truemage which copies the hard drive every now and again and saves it on a secure sector of the hard drive. next time i get a virus hopefully i can just use this to get to a previous date that is saved.......er hopefully that is!
