I want to haggle with Virgin, advice please?

Hi all,

My first years contract with Virgin expires in a few months and this has been the worst year I've ever had with any ISP. I won't go into details but the utter incompetence by Virgin, particularly at the beginning of my contract, has been surreal. Prob the worst company I've dealt with.

BUT... I'm in no hurry to lose cable and I'd like to stay with cable in the house if possible.

I'm currently on the first year deal of 2mb Broadband for £4.50/month with Virgin phoneline with £10.50/month line rental. This makes a total monthly bill of £15.50.

Now I can't stress enough just how bad Virgin have been to us and I really feel I'm entitled to something back from them. In fact they've said it enough times themselves but nothing's ever materialised, I've been too much of a 'nice guy'. Ideally I'd like an upgrade to 4 (or 10 as it's becomming) mb broadband and I'd like to keep the same price each month, no more than £20 MAX. I have no need for TV.

Will it be likely Virgin agree to this if I call them and threaten to leave them? I say "threaten" but my patience is up with them and Be is now available where I live - but like I said I'd like to keep cable.

Is there anything specific I should say?

Cheers crew!

You're mad, if Virgin is as bad as you're making out switch to Be and have an easy life.

Ah it's so true how bad Virgin are! Never had any trouble with the phone line. TV channels are constantly going off and not coming back on for hours or the picture jumps or sound jumps or the on demand stuff doesn't work. Broadband, i am on a dsl line was on 2mb the sevice is always down and always slow and thier excuse "We are aware there is a problem in the area". I told them about the poor service and that i was going to change to BT cus i work from home and i need the internet and the bumped me up to the 10mb one for free claiming that the service is better. It's not! I know it says *UPTO* 10mb but how offen do people acctually get any more than 3mb? I never do at all. Also my gf has an adsl line with virgin as she cant get dsl at her house and it is terrible! Whats more when she called about problems she goes to the broadband help which tell her that vigin class adsl lines as dial up then she goes to the dial up help who tell her she needs to speak the broadband support! Grrr they make me so mad. When you finnaly get through to someone who wants to help you they tell you they have a 20min cap on how long you can talk to them by phone and at 19min regarless of if the problem is sorted they say "sorry you must put the phone down and recall us if you want to continue recieving support" - good idea so i can start again with someone new. Terrible company had no problems when it was telewest or blueyonder!

Anyway like i said just tell then how poor thier service is they with offer you much better deals.

they will offer you the same deal for the next six months, you then just have to do the same again in another six months ;-)

I can't understand why, if they are so bad you want to stay with them?

Anyway ring retentions (on the options say you want to leave) and just tell them you want to cancel, when they ask why just tell them about the problems, say you have been offered up to 8mb bb from o2 for £7.50 a month as you have a mobile with them (even if you don't). Also mention you aren't happy that you were promised credits from them for your troubles and they never got placed onto the account. See what they offer. Don't push overly hard if you really want to stay as they aren't as generous as they used to be!

What has the engineer said when he came out?
If you are constantly having the problems (rather than one off's) it sounds like theres a signal noise problem on your line. Have they fitted any attenuators to the lines coming in at all?

Check the cables are tightened up securely into your modem and set top box. Then if they are go to the box outside (the one on your wall) open it and check all the cables in there are screwed in tightly too

Agreement. For the sake of saving a couple of quid a month, is any hassle worthwhile?

Cheers for advice guys, I'm still in debate with myself, it's a question of convenience really. Most likely will switch to be honest.

I called 150 yesterday evening and lol'd at the second option on the main menu being "Thinking of leaving us?" You'd think something like this would be hidden in some obscure menu, like hitting hash and mashing the receiver, but no, Virgin must be desperate!! It's at least 1 million key presses when you're reporting a problem in your area, but just 1 if you wanna leave their sorry asses!

However it was at least a 30 minute hold according to the announcement so I'll be calling back at a less busy time. People must have been leaving left, right and centre.
