I was going to buy an xbox 360 tonight....

I was going to buy an elite version this evening online cause I thought 250 was a good price, especially when I can get 1250 ipoints from the transaction. But I've just found rumors that Microsoft might be releasing a blu-ray version of the unit soon. I'm wondering if this might affect new games released? I don't want to buy an 'old style' unit only to find in a years time that all new released games won't work on my console.

Also I've read a lot of comments saying the machine is very noisy. I was defo going to be using the machine for streaming videos from my PC, so this could be an issue. Just how noisy is the xbox 360???

if that happened i dont think M$ would be very popular lol

I don't think microsoft would due to the many consoles they have sold. Maybe in a couple of years they'll release a new console, who knows

There will not be a new blu ray version. If they do a deal with blu ray - which I doubt - it will be an addon like the HD-DVD drive was.

Games will never use blu ray as they would fracture the installed base - same reason they will not let games insist on a hard drive.
#4
Nope they are not!

Don't be so hasty to say never never - there have been a lot of reports flying about (eg. http://www.xbox-scene.com/xbox1data/sep/EkpAZppZpkkiMgFjWB.php) that ODMs are taking orders for some type of blu ray for the 360, be it internal or a external drive.

As for noise - yes it is a problem no matter what people say. The DVD drives spin at 12x which causes quite a bit of noise, whereas the BD-ROM in the PS3 spins at 4x (if I remember). I have had two 360s and both have been loud, and compared to a PS3/Wii I would say considerably so.

Really doubt that will happen. Microsoft have set their stall up on the HD-DVD side of the battle.

Think a blu-ray version is as likely as a VHS version.

Plus, even with the HD-DVD drive add on, the games all work the same still
#8
BTW, you get used to the noise. It is fairly loud at first, but worth it in the end

You say that Microsoft won't due to the number of xbox's already sold, but isn't that what Sony did with the PS3. They have prevented people playing any of the old style games. Microsoft could easily do the same!

As I have understood, Microsoft's decision to use the external HD-DVD drive was so they could see how the 'battled' panned out before installed all their machine with a particular drive. Wise decision!!

But The ps3 blocked people playing games from a different console.. it will still be the xbox 360?

It would brand suicide for Microsoft to release any games on a BD disks, so it pretty much will be just for movies.

If you were Microsoft, what would you do. You have sold 19 million units. Do you...

a) Release and add-on drive that could potentially sell to each of those 19 million units

b) Release a 360 with built in drive that will only sell to new customers, and a fraction of those previous customers who are prepared to upgrade. Whilst at the same time risking the ill-will of the majority of the 18million previous customers who will now feel cheated and abused.

c) Release a 360 with a built in drive and a seperate add-on drive for those 18million, thus getting the best of both markets.

Don't know about you, but if I were in charge, I would choose at best C, at worst A, and B would be discarded as commercial suicide for the 360.

Are PS3 games currently made on blu-ray discs? And are 360 games made on standard dvd discs?

yep

Right. So how do they get the mammoth of information for 360 games on standard DVDs? Blu-rays hold 50gb of data so is fine for all the HD content etc....I'm just confused as to how it all fits on a disc with 8.4gb for 360 games???

This is a kind of an interesting article from a couple years ago that answers your question.

Dual Layer Dvd Disk.

Thanks for that link. So basically its saying that games so far haven't been using enough space to fill a DVD, never mind a blu-ray. I see!! :)

So like, are you still going to buy one or have we all put you off :).

Maybe we should all just wait for the Xbox 720.

Haha well I'm not going to be ordering one tonight!!!

Maybe if I get the good news I am hoping for on wednesday I will buy on then.....but only if I'm still having positive thoughts after this discussion!!!!

Don't think they will release a Blu-ray version seeing as Blu-ray is Sony's. Plus they're too cheap to put a blu-ray player in. They just rip you off!

Judging by my mates 360, there is no way in the world you could watch a movie on it. Unless its a loud action movie.

Sounds like gatwick airport!

I really don't like the sound of this!!
#26
If I was to open up the console and 'remove' the fans, would it defo overheat?
#27
There is a misconception about the noise the 360 makes - it really isn't too bad if you are not playing a game, as the noise comes from the drive which is reading the disc at the high speed rate. Movie DVDs and streaming etc is very quiet compared to the game playing (which when you get into the "zone" you get used to anyway). So if you are planning to leave it on all the time don't be worried about the ambient noise.

oh and any ps3 plays any ps1 game!
#30
They just about squashed MGS4 onto Blu Ray, Hideo wanted more space lol
#31
if you want something genric and crep, get a ps3.

if you want something innotive and next gen get a xbox.

its not 100% compatible with ps2 games though...
and the ps3's game selection is nothing compared to the 360, and its 'exclusives' aren't enough of a reason (for me at least) to warrant the overpriced games, extra initial outlay, and the fact that xbox live owns sony's online offerings.
