We have a Phillips one like this http://www.lakeland.co.uk/philips-delizia-ice-cream-maker/F/product/11506?src=gpelc&sq=phillips%20ice%20cream%20maker and cheaper here http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/1165692/art/philips/hr2304-70-ice-cream-maker.html?srcid=867
It is cheap at under £50 but makes delicious ice cream, my advice would be to also buy the Ben and Jerrys ice cream book.
The machine works by you puting the bowl in the freezer before use and then when you want to make the icecream, you put it in the machine which stirs it round. If you want to make big batches of ice cream you can buy a second freezer bowl and make more ice cream at one time. Yum.

I think Ice Cream makers, along with Bread Makers are 2 things I would never buy.

Hope this helps
