Ive had an idea for a website which provides a service to its users. I want to make sure no one else copies this while I develop it ... do I need to copyright / patent protect it ? If so. how is this done and what does it cost ?

thanks

I don't think you can, there are so many copy cat websites out, it's more about copyrighting the way you coded it. It better not be my idea though! I've spent ages on my one and only done a couple of the 25 pages :( and that's with Cold Fusion!

im not after copyrighting the actual website ... but more the idea.

there "must" be something for this. Otherwise people would steal other peoples ideas while its being developed ? Im sure there will be other people inolved while this is made so I dont want one of them to run off and make my own idea before me.

I think that's a contractual thing saying that all assets made are owned by the website, not sure though. Studying what is basically Web Design at uni and going into my 4th year and still haven't learned anything about copyright!

At the moment Facebook is in the courts because the guy who made it worked for another social network group before he left and made Facebook and copied some of the features.

Now that is illegal if the other website can prove it. Hope it doesn't turn out like the PCDOS MSDOS thing where IBM didn't get the rights to the code and Billy Gates copied it and added extras.
