Ideas to rescue a pub.....

OK....this is not advertising/self promo as Im not going to say the pubs name

A family member of mine owns a pub.....my brother is the manager type person and lives there so I want ideas to save the business for my brothers sake....as I can do this while im unemployed.

Lovely pub, refurbished a couple of years ago. pretty big resteraunt area, really nice food made fresh at reasonable prices. In a small village near a big city, at least 3 pubs nearby.

Problem is....the owners (family) have no business sense at all so Im hoping to get some ideas to give to em to try save their business and save my brothers job.

Got 3 months to do something in....I just cant think :(

Looking for all kinds of ideas, but they held a 'market day' type thing on Monday and it didnt do very well......

seen this tip on a tv show the other night "have a curry night"

hmmmm good idea I guess but I think its the advertising thats the problem....advertising in the pub is only seen by people already there....and their current customers arent really the 'curry nught' crowd.....they cant invest money in advertising as they dont have it....catch 22 but taa for the idea...will get noted down :)

obviously the biggest thing he can do is get better advertising, if you say everything is good about the pub then maybe not enough people know about how good it is

race night

what kinda race? I know you can have 'pig race' type things with the little pig toys but surely they will cost loads to hire and pulling people in will be the hardest part.....I havent told anyone (owners, brother etc) but im planning on just getting my ideas down, some 'ways out' hopefully then ill tell them my ideas and ask if I can try them......if im organising the things then I wont expect to be paid so cutting costs wherever possible

Without any advertising budget at all then they are only keep their existing customers. I would suggest they might be better spending a bit on advertising rather than special 'one off' nights. Even some cheap flyers to raise the profile of the pub would help. So many food pubs do promotions now that it is a difficult marjet to compete in on price. I worked for years in a chain food pub and we went from 1/3 off food bill Mon-Thurs 7 - 9 to a situation where it is now 1/3 off food all day every day. So avoid competiing on price. People like the traditonal country pub feel with traditional british food, something that is quite hard to get in many towns and cities so could be worth pushing that aspect.

Their main trade should be a Sunday for food they need to keep that in mind. Easter and Mothers Day ar coming, they need to start the menus NOW, advertising NOW and taking bookings for these events NOW.

Is there a viable lunch trade there? As during the week that will be where a lot of their dry take comes from, so they need to look at that. Any kind of advertising they can get will be a bonus. Loca advertising is free, make some leaflets and get out there, they need to work for their business, it won't come to them!

Maybe if they are near a city, they could do a pub lunch in your office kind of thing, where they take the lunches to the clients, or really push for the inhouse lunch trade.

Do special offer food days weekday nights, the quietest time, if it's good you get people in spending and they will book on the weekends for occassions and the like.

I could go on, lots of my family owned food pubs........They need to work at it though and not be lazy, saying we don't have the money blah, blah, blah, they need to be inventive!

Once smoking was banned all pubs died for me...........would rather stay at home. It's put thousands of pubs out of business between the smoking ban and cheap booze at supermarkets and it will just get worse.

lol...think you'll find that was Eastenders LOL

op...need to find what the other pubs do to make them a success.

ALSO whats the split on this pub? 50/50 on food & drinks or is one higher than the other. Worked in many pubs and the ones with bad beer dont ever do well even on food.

Dont waste money on advertising, word of mouth is the only thing that works for pubs unless your announcing a makeover, new management etc. Have promotional nights once everything is sorted. Is the food actually good or ok? is it worth the price? remember you will have a biase towards the business so ask others!

honestly, the only bad thing about the pub is the attitude of ONE of the owners......where do you suggest to advertise? local paper perhaps?

Poker night, Kids eat free night, Car boot sell night, Topless barmaid night, Football night

hmmm poker night would be interesting but would cost for a croupier?

kids eat free would prob lose them more money than gain it I think.......

car boot night is pretty much the same as a market night and that didnt really work....

the barpeople are my brother and the owner (50+) so not a good idea *shudder*!

not too sure what a football night would be lol

will rep as far as I can today and rep everyone eventually

true, I've never been a smoker myself, but over the years I've noticed a big decline in pub numbers, in a pub last night & the few that do smoke were all huddled outside in the freezing cold smoking, it must be very addictive to go to that sort of length to have yer fix

Have you got a printer? Do some flyers, A5 size so you get 2 on a page, print on coloured papers as it stands out more - maybe promoting a lunch time special. Drop them round to local businesses and go into the city and drop some at offices too. Put them up in local shops (ie newsagent and post office). Thats all I can think of.

does the pub rely on local trade?

if locals dont like the owner then they will stay away until he goes or is never around...seen it before and trust me when it comes to pubs people will go out of their way if they hate the owner

If this is true, the pub is doomed tbh, one pub that was bought off a relative, hugely sucessful country pub, the new landlady thought she could go in and pick up where she left off.............wrong.

She was a total cow, who ran the staff down, which in turn, meant the food and service suffered, so did the customer base, she ended up having to hand the lease back to the brewery as she had run the pub into the ground so badly, she could not afford it.

I would happily make flyers but its where to put them thats the problem! This pub does have the feel of a country pub, complete with wood burning fires etc I just dont see what to advertise about it lol......so you would suggest perhaps trying flyers JUST advertising that this is the pub and its here? might be worth a shot :)

Yeah theyre really good with the menus, the menus for easter and Mday are done, up and ready but the bookings just arent coming, reasonable price, nice menu etc. As for the advertising, I will make the flyers etc, whatever they need, but im just stuck as to where to put them. They used to have people in during the week, lately its 8-10 PEOPLE during daytimes. The office idea is good and origonal but the food would be cold.....I say close, its about 20mins out of the city.
They are the least inventive people ever! Im interesting in saving it for my brother....he cant as hes working all the time (salaried) to try and help......I will have to ask them about offers but I will try get them to agree to something....thanks for your help :)

I think the food brings in more than the drink.....bit too far to drive for a drink, but people eat and drink mostly. The food is lovely.....I havent had one bad meal there and I would slate it if I had. I think the price is reasonable as I know the quality they get......I dont think anyone would think it is unreasonably high, but it isnt a cheapo bargain type place.

correct.. I f the owner is a backside I would not even set foot in the place, plus a consideration is what sort of atmosphere there is in the pub, if its full of drunken riff raff most nights or Thurs to sun, yet another reason to give it a miss..

good quality food with the ambiance to with it works, all these gimmicks suck, cheap booze etc.
round here I used to enjoy the quiz night.

It may be the owner who needs sorting not the pub

World Cup coming up very soon - ideal 3/4 week event.

I saw an idea while visiting a mate at a pub down south - they will have Playstation 3's hooked up to a couple of their big screen TVs and will be hosting FIFA football tournaments on different nights - when England arent playing of course.

Judging by the pages of entrants at the front door this will be very lucrative for them they were charging a game fee where it was flat rate, and the winner of each night would get the pot.

only difficulties I could see would be the adjudication of it, but wish we had something like that in blackpool I would go to them - you cant beat beer, a bit of food, and a footie game tournament!

towards everyone, its a she but it really is infuriating how she speaks to customers with problems and staff.....example she is salaried as an owner....she actually works 6 hours a week.....would you do that if you owned a business? Its a real shame as everyone else tries so hard.....anyways, im gonna try and do it without her....

yup would need some ink but shouldnt cost too much......I will have to ask the owners for some offer ideas, if not then im thinking of just advertising the pub (as suggested above).....I will prob give them out locally and in the city

pretty much yeah. The regular locals generally come in when the annoying owner isnt working.....theres nothing I can do about her though so Im thinking positive....just ideas to save it....if I work hard enough it wont matter so much what she does

It maybe wise for your brother to start looking for a job tbh, get his cv out there, if the owner is a moron, it's only a matter of time before the business folds, seen it before.

owner only works 6 hours a week.......come when she aint there :p lol there is a relaxed homey feel about the pub...no drunken people, mostly couples/older families (rarely kids)...the owner does need sorting but i cant do anything bout that...just trying to help :)

Big plasma screen and instead of all the fans sat at home watching big matchs they watch it there

Are the 3 other pubs busy, what are they doing to get custom?

cheers for the link :) I dont think they have sky sports in the pub but will find out...although the big plasma screen would be pushing it :? They have smallish ones (about 32") around the pub

I think the brewery would make sure he is OK....He can always move back home if he loses the flat and the brewery really are fond of him....obviously he isnt sure of a job but they realise the work he puts in and they appreciate it, got loads of awards etc so I think they would be interested to keep him in their 'chain' even at another location...but yeah I have thought that :)

i think your wasting your time to be honest, it is a waste of time trying to get customers when it will be short lived, better off putting your energy into something that will last

from reading this thread your peeeing in the wind. The pub sounds doomed and the best thing you can do is get your bro well out of it and not bother wasting your time printing home made flyers that will have zero effect (if someone handed an obviously homemade flyer for a pub it'd go straight in the bin with a mental note never to go there).

Honestly, support your bro but it sounds a busted flush so get him out.

I probably am, but if im not losing much/anything then might as well try :) ill just make them not so obviously hand made.... I have a friend in advertising and marketing....will ask her to help me with stratergies
To be fair im pretty sure it doesnt matter to him....if he was made redundant now or in 3 months....he would be in the same position, and I dont think he would jump ship as its family, he will back them to the end...like Im trying to do

wasting money on something that aint gonna happen is pointless if your loaded let alone unemployed

if as you say your brother is valued by the brewery then he needs to go down that road and see how valued he really is

So why does he not approach the brewery with his concerns and ask for any vacancies they have direct, if he is as good as you say they would snap him up. It will be better than him running himself into the ground.

I really do get what you mean, honeslty, but I will try the flyers idea....they cant cost much, I never bought them an xmas pressie lol and as ive said above, my brother wont get out while its still going.....I think more so now they have a deadline, longest this can go downhill for is 3 months, least it wont drag out for years :)

it isnt gettting customers that will be your problem, it is keeping them, no one will hand over money to drink in an unwelcoming pub

its family...he will stick with them and try sort it out, closer to the time, I will suggest he does this, but at the moment I dont think he would consider it.....the brewery are well aware of whats happening, and what hes doing (when they need to talk to someone they request to speak to him rather than either of the owners...shows they trust him more) I do get your suggestion and I would say the same but I know he wont leave, if he left the business would defo fail (as he does most things now) and I dont think he could have it on his conscience.....least if he tries then he can say he did try

ohhh no lol 'she' is only nasty when someone complains etc....which is very rare (but obviously out of order!). I do think getting customers is the problem...they have a steady group of locals but its literally losing money by opening (costs more than the income) I think Im making her out to be worse than she is....she has moods, if someone complains to her when shes in a mood she will tell them to get lost...thats it basically, I wouldnt employ her but she isnt the worst landlady in the world

I would offer to hold a charity night for A good cause and get free publicity from that, and then when you know how much you have raised do a presentation night to hand the cheque over more publicity.then that way everyone is getting something good.
also how about open mic nights ,where people get to show people their talent and ur getting free entertainment ,pub could do a meal deal on these nights to encourage people in.
have they got a local news book/ letter that goes to the locals in the area these can do advertising for a fraction of normal cost and you are also supporingt a local project to keep going
set up a facebook page for the pub thats free ,
how about a mums special during the day -e.g coffee/tea mornings you can post details on the netmums web site for free and this is like word of mouth. it is worth looking at ,
registration is free www.netmums.com

hope this helps

A customer gets told to get lost, they tell 10, it then echos if you are in the country and everyone will know. If someone complains no matter how petty you think it is, you go out of your way to make it up.

People go to pubs and unwind not geet the nagging they get at home:w00t:

It's a lost cause, your brother probably knows that but won't leave until the pub has gone under out of loyalty.

That would be a mistake IMO, he should look after his own interests first if the owner can't be bothered.
