how many previous keepers has it had?
- why are you selling?
- what's the mileage / do you know if it's genuine?
- what sort of condition is the car in?
- any outstanding finance or HP agreement?
- does it have tax and MOT?
- does it have any service records?
- have you had any major problems with it?
- has it had any accidents? What was the damage?
- where was it repaired?
- has it been modified in any way?
- has anything been replaced on it lately?
- has it transported pets or does the driver smoke?

many people are dramatically reducing the mileage these days, but you can check online i think.

When you first ring to enquire, say "I,m ringing about the car you have for sale"(dont say which one)
if its a dodgy dealer he will reply "which car", telling you he has more than one for sale.
Always view the car at the owners address and in daylight.

Yes but a good dealer wouldnt sell a car in a private add to avoid the responsibility he legally has as a dealer.

No,it's not a dealer, the person selling it is a neighbour.

You can miss out on a good vehicle doing that....some people get good cars to sell from various lagitamate sauces, they are only avoiding paying tax which isn't your problem....Just HPi the car, check the mileage on previous M.O.T's or on the VOSA website where you can also view the advisory notes from the previous M.O.T. Test drive the car and if possible take a knowledgeable person with you to check it over.

A Nissan Primera

How about paying for an AA (others are available) check. To be honest if you do not know what questions to ask you are unlikely to know if the answers given in return are right or genuine.

True but you will also get some people who will take a wreck and tart it up and give it a dodgy mot,or sell a stolen car that has had its id changed and if this is done in a private sale there is little the buyer can do about it

That's not a huge mileage for a 7 year old car - it's only 20,000/year - average is usually about 12,000/yr, but if it's motorway mileage that's not a problem - it's the constant stop/start of town driving that wears out components quickly. My cars do about 36,000 - 40,000/yr and are still in good condition when I trade them in at 3 years :D
