AVG is really annoying sometimes ..... if the update fails you keep getting the Update Failed or Failed Connection info balloon. To stop this, open AVG, go to Tools, then look Advanced, then look for Balloon Tray Notifications, switch off Display notifications about update, Apply, OK. Now try manually updating.

If you don't get the update, at least you wont be pestered by the notification.

Do you actually mean Windows Update? I would not do it to be honest, but you can update manually. Open Internet Explorer, then Tools, then Windows Update. You'll go to the Windows site, just follow the procedure.

Or click here http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx

Mine did this as it would open in my default browser - Firefox & then just hang/crash. I had to change settings so just Windows Update would open automatically in IE & it's been fine since, Can't remember where option was now. It's easy to run manual update as well as Predikuesi has suggested
