If I buy a v+ hd box from ebay will the free hd channels work?

I saw this deal for a v hd box for £49- http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/675406/virgin-v-hd-box-for-49-no-monthly-f - and contacted virgin about it but taking the box also means starting a new 12 month contract, which I dont want to do.

The customer services say its simply a plug and play affair. So if I bought a box would I receive the free hd channels such as bbc hd / itv hd?

I have a virgin m tv/net/phone package.

Thanks

does this mean they will be blocked? how can they sell them on ebay?

when virgin give you the box they switch it on at their end, this is how you get the channels you subscribe to, so if your box hasnt come from them then it will be useless

My brother doesn't have Virgin no longer, they are yet to collect his box but he gets most FTA channels. ( a funny mix like it2+1 but no itv2 and other things like that)

that will change in the coming weeks.
the new encryption cards are being sent out and if he doesnt have one, his channels will disappear when the encryption is switched on at Virgin's end.

you need a paired card - as yours won't be paired to any other box, it won't work.

ok, cheers.

and if you ring up and ask to have it paired, they will ask for the serial no of the box, they will discover its not allocated to your account and tell you you've bought stolen property

been there done that.

guy I worked for was prosecuted by Virgin media a few years ago for buying boxes over the net, flashing them and selling them locally.
no, I didnt have one, but as I worked for him, I (along with his business partner and other staff) was arrested and questioned.
I got bail for 9 months then returned to find no further action against me.
the rest of them had charges but there was insufficient evidence for a criminal trial, so Virgin (who had just taken over Telewest) pursued a civil trial and they got £40,000 out of him, plus 300hrs community service and 12months suspended for 12 months.

not long after me and 2 others were made redundant.

Virgin never "took over" NTL/Telewest.
I would imagine what happened is worse case (unlucky about your job), I doubt VM will chase you for buying a box.

nope criminal charges were dropped and all went quiet for several months, then it was taken up again by Virgin Media.
went to Newcastle court in a civil trial.

i was in the shop when he called to tell us the result.
virgin wanted more money but settled for £40,000 aslong as it was paid in 12 months.
one of the other techs was also prosecuted for having a box.

the local newspaper story is still 'google-able'.
but only if you know the fella's name....

you can't get community service for a civil matter, nor would it be heard in a crown court.
Virgin may have persued a private criminal prosecution but it certainly wasn't civil.
