This is a global warming thread.... is the title true.... or naive... what would happen if the ice caps melted?
Greenland has melted... to some degree before....... polar bears survived other hot phases .... so..... what is the problem?

not all the ice is floating, some of it is on land, so if that melts, sea levels go up

floating ice is already in the water, so sea levels dont change
#2
its all a myth

Sometimes the most obvious answer is hidden to us simple mortals... but the "scientists" only ever refer to the polar ice caps melting... major league ice.... is there land under the ice caps?

well, i didnt want to break it to him

yes, some has land underneath.

I think global warming is real.. to some degree..... just not man made, or exascerbated.....
#6
Unfortunately the next ice age is going to come too late...
#7
Greenland is actually expanding atm and has been for the last decade or so. It's all over-hyped.

What jubbyme said is accurate enough though.

thank you for not picking holes in it, although it wasnt much of an answer to the op

Too much hype, too much talk of taxes for everything, no real solutions or the tax money earmarked to be spent properly
I agree we shouldnt waste oil on gas guzzlers, and have homes insulated to a repectable level, but most of what was proposed hit poorer people all the harder, and meant people sit in the cold in winter.

All crap then? Thought so..... Carbon taxes on the way,...?

Its all way over exaggerated. If you look at recent graphs from the last hundred years ago the last 50 years has been very cold. Before that the average temperature was relatively similar to now, any further than that and information is bleh, we are slightly higher but it doesn't mean there is a super global warming crisis on its way. Much is a ploy for money, humans probably do increase temperatures in the world but not to the extent that is claimed. I think more people are coming to grips that it's untrue, I mean look at the snow we've had. Global warming causes global freezing as well ?

polar bears are dying because they cant travel to places throughout the year to get food because the ice has melted and they can't swim for thousands of miles so they starve to death.

i don't get your title? if ice belts in a glass water levels go down? what?

lol are you dumb? the average temperature of the globe is higher.
not last saturday was freezing so global warming must be fake.
havent you seen the recent extreme weather changes? all over the globe?

in b4 its all too late because the developed world is too greedy.

If ice melts in glass then the water level stays the same. In the same way if the arctic ice all melted the sea level would stay the same. Antarctica has land above sea level so if that all melted, the sea level would rise, similarly for all other melting ice on land - glaciers etc.

So if global warming exists, then you might expect a rise in sea levels. Whether the present climate change will continue to be a warming, we do not know - I think that the meteorologists put rather too much store in their computer predictions. It is now well documented that climate change has been very rapid - both in warming and in cooling - in the past.
If any global warming is due to carbon dioxide, then it is possible that human activity contributes to it.

It seems to me that global warming or not, it is best to utilise resources carefully.

100% correct.
Global Warming is a natural process, as is Global Cooling. Humans would only contribute a few percent towards the inevitable warming process.
The increased level of Global Warming over the last few decades is not all down to increased emmisions, it's also due to Solar Cycles in the sun, we are currently at the peak of a Solar Cycle, where the most activity from the Sun occurs due to the higher number of Sunspots, this activity increases the Earths temperature during this time, before eventually dropping.
The governments already know this and were rumbled in a case labled "Climategate" (A case rumbled in East Anglia)
But as you have correctly stated, it's all about the carbon taxes.

extreme weather happens, not just lately

we just forget too easily, vast earthquakes have happened many times, and some much more extensive, storms, snow, the thames used to freeze over enough to cross from kent to essex into the 30's

I never advocate waste of any valuable material, but we cannot tax to death energy either, as that plays into the hands of the rich all too easily at the expense of the poor
#22
Except the scientific community agrees that MOST of the observed temperature increase is not due to natural phenomena

Please look at arctic temperature graphs before you make a comment like that. And extreme weather conditions ? What about when the thames froze over and there was mass coldness ? More devastating earthquakes, floods have occured, just with media being so easily accesible we hear about it more than we may have done in the past. You forget just television was invented in 1946.

the thames freezing over was due to a mini ice age

I cannot understand that graph seeing as none of the colours are labelled. Im guessing the black one is a prediction, and its outdated. It's not that much higher than the medieval period anyway, I doubt they had hybrid boats or recycled axes. The worlds temperature isnt consistent, because its higher than it has been in 'X' years doesnt mean its going to rocket up until we change something. As I said proper scientific results of today can hardly be compared to ones done thousands of years ago, who knows how they conducted them and how valid they were
banned#27
lest we forget mars has a similar temperature graph, im sure we caused warming there too!

I am now running away, as I dont want to get dragged into global warming, I shall be dead before you lot, so im sure I wont worry about being flooded!
