This furniture must be fixed to the wall with the enclosed wall fastener.
Different wall materials require different types of fixing devices. Use fixing devices suitable for the walls in your home, sold separately.

since when do free standing drawers need to be fixed to the wall?
oh and does any1 have this and can comment on quality and such?

I would have thought so. I've bought wardrobes with wall atachments before. never used them though. If your near Ikea why not just pop in and ask them?

Agree with Bella, its written purely as a safety feature. My friend has the malm range in her kids room and is really pleased how solid and functional they are.

It's a load of mince. Just buy it and leave it free standing. Ikea seem to go out of their way to confuse their customers.

Its just so that if children climb on them they wont tip over and land on them (sometimes resulting in fatal injuries). I have bought furniture and not used the fastener before though.

I had that set of drawers and did a tip test, filled the top two drawers either side with books and opened them.
They did tip.
Unless you have small children or intend filling the top drawers with weighty items and opening them both you should be ok.
The wall fastner is just a small strap you fix with one wall plug and screw.

We have the Malm chest of drawers no need to fix them to the wall as they are not top heavy but word of warning though make sure you have someone to help load and unload the car as the 3 drawer chest weighs 75lbs so a 6 drawer chest is gonna weigh substantially more.
Not bad quality but do take your time assembling it.

I never used to bother but my two boys have both pulled wardrobes and chests of drawers over on top of themselves so now fix everything to the wall, including non ikea stuff! :)

Our homes 95% Ikea furniture and we fix things to the wall as a precaution

Wilko's do brackets very cheaply they are called Tie brackets, less than £1

I think they are really good quality for the price. Have the small bedside drawers in oak veneer and they look really good

Quality is great if you take the care when erecting ie, tighten properly, make sure it's square.

We had loads of the Malm furniture and it aged well and when we moved and sold it on three years later it still looked new.
I used the orange oil cleaning wipes you can buy in most supermarkets.

I've got those drawers. I didn't use the wall fixings and the sit fine on my carpeted floor.

The unit is quite big and heavy so it's not likely to tipple over. Go into ikea and give it a push, you'll soon find out for yourself ;)
