I received a phone call today and have been invited to an open day,

The company I currently work for are very pedantic when it comes to time off, esp' at short notice.

The open day is on Monday so not sure whether to ask for the time off or call in sick?!

Any thoughts?!

Call in sick

100% agree, unless you have a carp sick record and they might be happy to give you the time off to potentially get shot of you

If you really want to go and they have a proven record of not sanctioning leave then what else can you do??? It works both ways as if they have not been reasonable before the last thing you want is to ask and be rejected cos it will blow your chances of a sickie..............Get a headache and sore throat on Friday afternoon!!!!
#5
Should also add that because I have had 2 sicks in the last 6 months i'm under review?!!

I want to get out of the job but dont want to be forced, esp' within todays job shortages?!!

I am having a root canal done on tuesday so could extend a sickie over a few days if feel like ****.
#6
If you're under review you sure you want to risk it for a job you might not get ?

Especially the way things are with the economy
#7
honesty doesnt pay off in these situations. if you are sure they will not find out. call a sick day. simple as that.
#8
Sickies a no no then in my opinion, don't give your employer any more ammo to get shot of you. I work for a massive PLC and whilst they ain't making permanent staff redundant they are looking for ways like this is "manage people out of the company/group"
#9
The dishonesty on here never fails to surprise me.

Open day is 12pm start, have not been told the length, and my shift starts at 2pm?!

Its going to be atleast a 2.5hr drive back to work after the open day so wouldn't want to commit to going back if it runs a little late.
#11
dont go then-there will be other chances-tell the company running the open day you cant make it and is there an alternative? they will admire your commitment to your current job.

yeh esp if you have a poor sick record already...you'd be mad to go. If you called in to me sick i would be sure to confirm it-and dont forget management aren't stupid-they know you are pulling a fast one-and they remember..

do you have any holidays left? Tell them you have an emergency at home and need to put a days holiday in. Such as your electricty has gone off and your waiting the electricty board to come and sort it but they havent give you a time they are coming??
[mod]#15
Remember to have a excuse ready when you bump into your current boss at the open day. Oh how i'd laugh.

Open day = lots of applicants. To get the job, you're going to need to be something good. HR staff get their bonuses out of employing the best, most reliable employees. Someone who takes four absences within six months is not an attractive employee, so there's a fairly remote chance you'll be picked up by the other company anyway. Given that you might get sacked for trying, it's not worth the gamble imo.

You got any kids?

Nope,

Kids are the greastest excuse ever for time off, you should get some. Maybe adopt one from Africa:thumbsup:

I think if he takes mon tues off it will class as one sickie, I can take upto about 10 days as one sickie
#24
think of an excuse and see if you can take it as an unpaid day

Tell me about it,as a person with no children people taking time off continually for their kids is annoying.
#26
Why not use the 'funeral' option?

I think european law sorta enforces it

Aha, I see where your coming from,

The company works on each accurance, so if im off for 1 week, its 1 sickie. not 5.

So I suppose it will be 3...

one of my staff had 4 grandparents die in 6 months....lol-as he had 4 die in his previous post in the same company..then one day his Grandma visited us:w00t:

Gotta leave for work in a second, will take the honesty route and ask for a day off, if i dont get it i'll phone the guy back and ask for another date, hopefully there will be one!

Many thanks for everyones input!

Tell you work your going to a funeral....

most jobs give you grace for that, just tell them it's at half 1 and it's a family funeral, your aunt or something...
#33
Tell them the root canal has been brought forward a day and then take a day off to recover.
#34
Phone in sick and get a self certificate from your doctors, that covers you for a week... if they ask for a doctors line just tell them that you have to self certifciate for the first week and then the doctors give you a sick line... I used to work in a doctors surgery...

Dont say funeral or any other lame excuse at least have the decency to blag it properly.

Monday morning ring up work and sniffle and say there has been a death in the family, the bonus to this is you will get the Monday off for grief, then a week/10 days later you get another off for the funeral.

Or if you have a female boss, ring in and say you have an emergency drs appt as you have discovered a lump.

Do not under any circumstances mention diarrhoea, sickness or flu as that would attract suspicion especially as its a monday, if you do at least take tuesday and wednesday fro full effect.

Make sure you impress at the open day.

either take an unpaid day off

go sick if your not too bothered about being caught and the trouble that may cause.

Or ask the employer and state its quite important and you can make up the time, if they say no then take it with a pinch of salt and that you are commited to your work...at the end of the day you dont wana mess ya boss bout!!!

But being honest with your employer in personal experience is better then lying and getting caught!!! Job is important especially now!!! :)

Right, if anyone stumbles back upon this thread....

Due to lots of people being off sick or taking holiday I went for the half day option, I have until 5pm on Monday to get from the Open Day back up to work. As long as it doesn't run past 3 I should be ok.

Just gotta keep my fingers crossed not and hope I get either a job or a proper interview.

Thanks again for everyones input.

Goodnight,

J
