Try a hot bath to relax the muscles...

Also, try deep heat at the base of your spine...

my mum had that and had to go and see (don't laugh at the spelling) an osteopath, it was the only thing that worked hope you feel better soon.

Does sound like sciatica (trapped nerve) massage aroung the lower back / bum area and take 400mg of ibuprofen with food three times daily, should do the trick
#11
How old are you btw? Both my parents have had sciatica so I expect it might be ahead for me too... Some basic info on wiki here that offers advice on the most common treatments etc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sciatica
I know how painful and frustrating this can be. Hope you get it under control and are feeling better soon :gift:

just make sure you do still try to get better and think positively otherwise it's easy to slide into a self-pitying depression with a fear of returning to work! Hopefully the sun will be out again soon to cheer everyone up :-)

massage may help. I have a friend who is a qualified masseur and specialises in sports injury massage - when my back and legs play me up I get him to give it a good going over and that usually helps. Maybe an osteopath might work or a chiropracter - they do different things so it might be worth a call to see what they say

Sorry to hear that. :-(

Unfortunately it's common for that kind of thing to happen no matter what the illness/disease/disability. People always think they know better. :-(

As hard as it is though, just try to ignore them. You know the truth. :) Feel better soon. :friends:

people do think they know better. i hurt my knee, i dislocated it but tore my cruciate ligaments and medial collatarel ligament at the same time. that was nearly a year ago and i am still in a knee brace and people breeze past saying is that not better yet. i am 26 so people thing when your young you just click your fingers and be all better.

i will be like this forever a bloody long time because i have hms they cant do surgical repairs.

i feel your pain hun i really do, i would be going back to the docs though hun if they cant cure it they should make sure they pain has gone. i find pain patches can work although they can irritate my skin.

Im 21 and have it although i now dont suffer much at all. my advice is go to a physio then give you exercises to loosen up the back and will work on the nerves (very painful cos they have to get through the muscle and tissue to get to nerves :x

if he does give you a sick note then take it hun it isnt your work mates that have to live with the pain and if you dont rest it now and sort it then you could do long term damage for the sake of a whinge ass at work it isnt worth it.

aw hun hope u get better!x

The worst thing you can do for this is to sit in a chair as that position just makes it worse, you need to try and lie down when you're resting as it helps straighten out the back and relieve pressure on the nerve. Also do try to stay as mobile as you can and when this bout of pain is over then try to exercise around the area so you strengthen the muscles in the lower back. Basically this will help lower the chances of it happening again as it can be caused by a slight 'slip' in the vertebrae, pinching the nerve.

Until it gets better take Ibuprofen (you may not feel they kill the pain, but they are very good at taking the inflammation away and that does help relieve the pain). You can also take Paracetamol on top of Ibuprofen (check with your doctor if you're unsure about this) if the pain is bad. Or just keep taking what your doctor has prescribed and try to keep moving about.

When it first happens put ice on the area to reduce the swelling (heat at this point just makes it worse as it helps further inflame the area and puts more pressure on the nerve) and then after the first couple of days start applying heat to it to help increase the circulation and quicken the healing process. This was the info given to me by Physios when I had a similar problem and the exercise bit really does lessen your chances of it happening again, although you'll always have a higher chance than someone who's never had it.

Hope it gets better soon!

Sounds like DVT- deep vein thrombosis. Like they get on airplanes. Get the doc to check it again.

I started getting sciatica when I was 20. I get it on and off, sometimes really bad that I can't walk.
I've never been given a sick note though, just told to keep moving.
I found laying down terrible as it would take half an hour to get up again (not good if you want a wee in the night). I used to sit on an office chair as that would hep to sit you upright (plus they have wheels - good for getting around, lol)
painkillers didn't touch it at all, I was given pethidine in the end but that made me sick (not good with sciatica). I've had physio but they didn't help. One doc refered me for an mri scan but that didn't happen as someone thought best to give me another go at physio.
Anyhow, I know how you must feel and you have my sympathy. It will go away though.

Aww......... you have my sympathy I too suffer from sciatica on and off, it's really painfull, best thing for it is ibuprofen and pracetamol I find.

I take 3 ibuprofen daily anyway as I have osteoarthritis.

Best to try and keep moving and sleep on a firm surface as possible too.

Hope it improves for you soon.
