Importing from china, how does customs work?

Hi,
I'm considering importing from products from china to sell on. I don't know how the customs charges work though. I would be ordering the products, and they would be being shipped via DHL.

How are the customs charges paid ? Is it on delivery, before they hand over the goods ? I have no idea how it would work.

You have to pay vat - and duty on the total incl shipping...the duty will depend on what class your goods fall into

Generally they open your stuff, use it for a bit, probably look on amazon to see if the sender has put the correct value and see how much it would be in the UK, if not they'll charge you duty anyway*
