In Glasgow for a few days, can anyone reccomend fast walking route to town and places to avoid.

Im quite far down Sauchiehall Street near the University Of Glasgow and need to be at the Caledonian University 10am tommorow(decided to do 1 module at uni to pass time!) but it takes ages to walk to city centre, about 30 minutes so donte want to rush in morning or be groggy, and think buses are expensive(unless there is a cheaper one)

Is there any subways nearby? I was also thinking of getting a 2 day sightseeing pass as with my student discount and £1 off it comes to like £7 which is good for daytime but not the evening but as I mainly will be around in the day its still quite cheap.

Also what streets should I avoid in the area at nighttime as may go for a drink tonight but worried, also may go on a night out tommorow(since its freshers loads of freebies in bars) but worried about walking alone at night!

If your near the University of LGasgow then you'll be able to get the Subway from Hillhead, just walk up University Avenue onto Byres Road and turn right and thats it there. Get the subway to Cowcaddens and you're only a couple of minutes walkaway.
As for going for a drink, main places to go are Sauchiehall Street, Bath Street and the Merchant City.

sauchihall street and bath for drinks, plenty of taxis if u dont want to walk alone, hummingbird is a quality bar, amazing cocktails i would reccomend it, its on bath street i think lol

How long you here for? as long as you stay in the main streets if you wanna go drinking you will be fine-it really isnt as bad as people say you know.

Nip down to st vincent street and go to king tuts wah wah hut for a drink-tonight is one of the few nights there isnt a gig on but its a great wee place and very friendly.

If you still in glasgow on saturday you are welcome to join the barky clan going for drinkies and then to the glasgow ferry to see "the rising"-the worlds number one springsteen tribute act.

Just did a check on Google Maps University Of Glasgow is still about half a mile away from here, its just off Gray Street I am near the Kelvingrove Hotel, says both KelvinHall and KelvinBridge stations are about 0.7 of a mile away.

Looks like its getting a bus then, saw plenty go up and I think it said £3.45 for a 2 journey ticket but didnt know if that meant 2 times you could get on or 2 returns.

I did notice loads of bars on Sauchiehall Street, was really wanting to go to Jaks as had one in home town I loved, went into one that claimed to have "Duff beer" and it was just Fosters though I suppose they were right Think it was called Firehouse or something house lol.

Here till Saturday morning as managed to blag a hotel for £50 for 3 nights without breakfast though the room I have is quite old and tatty and not like the posh ones in photos.

If your on Sauchiehall street then the closest subway may be Kelvingrove. To be honest i don't think it should take 30 mins. It takes me 15-20 mins to walk from hillhead underground to Cali. There is no where in the city centre and the area that you will be walking on that is in anyway dangerous. They only dodgy areas in the city centre are towards the east end.

As micoo said Hummingbird is probably one of the best bars in glasgow.

Thats what I thought but according to googlemaps its a mile and a half to the uni.

The 2 journey ticket is £3.45, it means that when you get on the bus that counts as 1 journey and when you go to get the next bus the bus driver will take your ticket and stamp it to show that you've used your 2 journeys so you won't be able to get on anymore buses.

I'd recommend getting the all day ticket for £3.75 just incase you end up needing more than 2 buses.
#12
Oh thats fine then didnt see that one, do the buses run late and if so can you use the all day one after midnight? Just in case I decide to stay out one night.

All days are valid until 1am, and some buses run late but only usually on a Friday/Saturday, just check out First Bus Glasgow for timetable information.
#14
Oh and just in case you don't know our buses don't give change, so make sure you have the correct fare when boarding.
#15
Not sure if I should go straight to UOG union or go to Sauchiehall Street bars, plan to not be out long though as dont want to be feeling rough in morning before going to class.

If Jaks is Jumpin Jaks......stay far far away lol
Tip of a place lol
Theres "The Garage" but its only really usefull for picking up freshers, while listening to cheesy cheesy pop music, once you hit 20 you kinda start to feel out of place lol (dunno what age u are).

What course are ya doing at Caley?
Was there and the biology/science departments are really good

I just turned 28 a few weeks ago, doing Social Sciences at Caley, pretty much doing History and Economics modules, only part time for something to do though.

And yeah Jaks is Jumpin Jaks, loved the one in Dumfries when I was 21-24 at its peak as it had members only areas and free snacks and £1 drinks for members.

Ill see you at uni. Im there tomorrow as well. Every Thursday this year for me. Just get the Subway to Buchanan Street or Cowcaddens. Its all sign posted where to go from there. Buchanan Street is a better place to get off though.

You really cant go wrong though.

Im 26 in a month so not that far off age wise.
Yeah dont go near Jaks, it basically consists of sleazy 40+ yr old guys drooling over whatever poor 18yr old freshers decide to go in cos theyv never tried it before lol.
Dont go near the Moon, if its still there, basically the same thing except most the lassies arent legal yet lol
Or the Savoy since its perma grab-a-granny night.

If your a mad raver, see whats on at the Arches, dont expect to go into Uni the next day though lol

Not been out in Glasgow for a while, last time was a stag do, so most of it seemed to be spent in the strppers (dont know which one) though i do know that bar at the top of Sauchiehall St (think its the Hall, across from the Garage) sells Desperados now :D Fun Times

Oh and Caley Union used to be atrocious when i was there, but then thats about 4/5 years ago.
Strathclyde was better, better drinks, cheaper drinks, and they had pool tables.

Caley just had the nicer looking girls, i think cos of the Nursing students lol

Caley union closed down 2 years ago according to website and now everyone uses Walkabout it seems, which is a bit annoying since paid £3 for a card for Walkabout and found at Caley students get it free.

I am not much of a raver but like to just stand about looking lost or lonely in a bar and talk to a randomer now and again but only in real bars and clubs that dont play stuff like Dizzee Rascal though pop is funny.

Shame about Jaks as the one in my home town still gets a young crowd.

Anyway back now but may go drinking tommorow or Friday not sure yet since Friday at a new place called Milan or something has £1 drinks and giving away free hoodies just a shame I dont have my matric card yet(will be about a week i'd say)

I heard the UOG students mention somewhere called Viper a lot, I almost think I had a chance of getting in there free since it had a members list but friends were allowed in since some Psychology society students came down to smoking area at union bar(I dont smoke but wanted "fresh" air) and first this really good looking girl asked me for a lighter then 10 minutes later asked if I was here for the psychology group and I said I was just visiting the campus and she said oh ok, she actually walked up to me to.

Should of risked it lol just I want to be fresh and on time for first day.

Thats not a bad thing, they let it go to ruin when i was there.
When i started it had 3 bars, then the upstairs bar (with the pool tables) couldnt serve drinks, but was changed into serving hot food, and got shut at 5pm. Hence everyone left to go to Strathclyde union, 5 minute walk away with a fully stocked bar and lots of pool tables, open till late at night.
Think they shut the back bar as well, so it was just one. Garbage and their own fault lol.
Walkabout was never really my thing, and Strathy sold drinks far far cheaper lol.

Dont know much about the Glasgow Uni side, so not sure what theres to do there.
Done the west end a couple times, not as much fun i think lol.
And hell should have gave it a go, get back to her bit, and then you can leave and still get a good ngihts sleep.
Least you'd have a smile on your first day lol
#28
I guess you can just show your matriculation card from Caley and get into Strath no problem then? Just want to check as right now only have my old Hull uni card which is still in date and may ask if I can use that.
#29
Should be able to use any i think, we never had a problem.

Thats if theres no rule changes since i went, and that was 4/5years but i doubt it.
#30
Ack, forgot mobile this morning and left it on sideboard near sink, came back and it was damp and was turned off and wouldnt turn on!

Worried now that the cleaner may have knocked it into sink and kept quiet.

Was going back to Ayr anyway to get my charger, change of clothes and toiletries anyway.

Still in Glasgow btw, found a rock bar I like just up from Central Station that I like but not sure about how crammed it will be tonight as its pay day for many people and freshers at uni so may be risky, might go to Strath Union instead then the new place Milan for the freebies.

You know whats funny though didnt realise there was no classes on today otherwise would of gone out last night, nightmare!

haha yeah its a holiday weekend and last night our local was chocablock - we are off out to Glasgow tonight. We dont normally go into the city centre much now (cause we are old farts) but meeting some friends who are coming in from opposite direction and this is a central meeting point.

Enjoy yourself tonight :)

We are going for a meal first in Anniesland then meeting our friends at the Counting House. We are all old remember haha! We are all 40!! We normally stick with our local pub which is just brilliant - everyone knows each other and always great bands on - plus its a two minute walk down the village and no taxis

You will be fine!!

Yeah I should be, just didnt know pubs to avoid that may not like outsiders or picking on me for being different lol, I am a aspergers person dont forget(if you remember or even knew) so come across as weird to people and random people normally say horrible things to me on nights out be it in the streets or in a bar.

Yeah I am still young but generally dislike where most 18-25 year olds go, not the location but the fact they play stupid music either generic loud nonsencial rock, cheesy pop music/hip hop whatever.

I am more easy listening mixed 50/50 with stuff like Guru Josh, DJ Sammy, etc and not just someone who has sped up their voice like a chipmunk as I think thats "chavvy"
