Me and 5 other friends (6 total) are going camping soon and 2 of us are driving to wales, taking everybody else. The distance from our setting off point is 120 miles there and the same coming back. How much should i charge them for petrol? I find it hard to ask them for money but i think its reasonable to cover the costs between us?

We are traveling in a 1.1 clio and a 1.0 yaris both using petrol. Could you tell me a fair charge for each way?

fill the car up and split between ya

Work out the mileage, work out how much petrol will cost you (average MPG)

Split it between the number of people in the car, any good friend will offer to split the petrol.

I wouldnt bother asking them to cover wear and tear on the tyres, petrol should be enough IMO

yeh im not worrying about wear and tear, its my mums car so she can worry about that after we get back :whistling:

does around £10 each sound decent?

I would estimate how much both cars are going to use and create a pot. Fill up both cars using the pot money during the holiday and then everyone pays the same. Any money left over is split fairly between you (or used to buy some flowers to thank your Mum for the use of the car ). If the pot needs a refill the same applies - everyone chips in.

Note: Don't forget to find parties close by - that way you are not always driving while everyone else is drinking!

so i gather 3 in each car? i would suggest as you set off with friends in car you go to petrol station and just say ''right i'm gonna put £50 quid in, ok to split three ways?'' and if need be do same on way back (cant see you having to though on engine size) tbh your friends should offer at petrol station before you have to suggest though

i might go for the other suggestion and just split the cost of the tank between us, ill try to make sure my mum doesnt fill it up and leaves it relatively low

also good suggestion with the flowers, that would shock my mum :whistling:

I wouldn't make it so rigid, they are your friends after all.

Why not just make the journey and see what they offer you?
#10
fill the cars up before you leave, top them up when you get there. multiply that money by 2 to account for the return journey and then split it by the number of people on the trip.

yeah thats your best bet and im sure your friends wouldnt mind throwing in a few pounds each for a bunch of flowers for your mum ! as they wouldnt be going /would be a lot dearer if she wasnt so kind to lend you car !

Have a great time :-D

What i usually do, if i am giving somewhere a long lift, is, pick them up, and say i've just got to nip to the petrol station, any good friend should volunteer some money towards it.

Nah, what if they dont !, have been in a similar situation before and can get akward if they dont offer and why should op pay for petrol as well as providing car , go with what i said op , just make it sound casual at petrol station  ( they maybe like some of the people ive been in similar situation and genuinley dont think ! or then again you get tight gits who want anything for nothing !!) lol

Because then they may think its a free drive, I'm a business student dont wanna be getting short changed  :) (someone else has the same idea as me)

I'll try the going to the petrol station altho the way we are traveling might make it hard i'll try to explain :)

The two cars are carrying all the stuff. My friends with nobody in. Mine will have one in the side and my friends dad is going that way anyway so he's dropping 3 of the people off in his own car. I dont think he'll want money for it as he'll be doing the trip anyway.

That could make chipping in at the petrol station hard

Thats what i said , give them a chance to offer and if they dont then casually say '' ok to split this 3 ways guys ? '' (in each car )

He prob wont want the money if he's doing the trip anyway , but the offer is nice all the same , would show some appreciation anyway, Going from past experience here :)

They won't be very good friends then IMO.

I've driven my mates lots of times in my car as it's bigger, they either volunteer the money to share the diesel or buy me a few pints in the pub.

Not sure where my post went, but I guess the PC swallowed it when the harddisk was making all those clunking noises.

Anyhow, the way we always do it is that the driver alone pays for the fuel, and everyone but the driver pays for the food and beer and shizzle and the driver gets to keep what goes unopened, and it's everyone else's responsibility to bring tent + equipment and etc. I've no idea how it works out in terms of penny-by-penny accuracy, but it seems fair enough.

Me and my mates go to wales all the time biking, £10 each covers petrol, but his is a diesel. One of us who's not driving offer to pay the toll charge as well, £2.80 I think?

make sure you do !lol,
Hope you all have a great time guys x, stay safe xxxx

Install a meter in the car and charge extra for vomitting or soiling of the upholstery
#23
Just say £20 each, no doubt you'll be doing a few miles when you're there too dont forget. I go to Wales and often you find that the remote petrol stations charge more so fill up at your cheapest local garage before you go. I find I get much better mpg with Shell which works out cheaper than buying supermarket fuel.

Don't fill up on the motorway, they will sting you for 6p or 7p more per litre :x

£10 each sounds fair as these cars do around 60mpg so 4 gallons = £24 split 3 ways

This.
Or brim the car before you leave. Then when you get home fill it back up to the top again. Will give you the exact amount it's cost you.

ah well thats good of him, in that case i would still 'suggest' to your friends £10 each, put say £45 petrol in your mums car and the remainding £15 should be enough for flowers for mum for the lend of the car and a bottle of your dads favourite tipple,or crate of beers! as a thankyou for helping out

got back from camping this weekend.

I spent a total of £60 on petrol and my friend £58. Charging friends is difficult, they all felt it was unfair to be charged for petrol and only managed to get £15 off one person. The rest were awkward and kept putting it off.

So my theory is to set up a payment before hand to stop arguments. I topped up the car twice while there and they didnt offer to pay :(

gutted really, i'll try to chase money up but when they live across the country i probably wont get anything

yeh it was a mint holiday, we bought a brand new tent before the holiday. The first night we had gale force winds of 50mph. Tent blew over ripped and two steel poles broke! :P we had a 50 mile trip to bangor to get a new one from the nearest halfords :D

Although we got a new one for free and made it eventful, so im not complaining :)
