He downloaded a copy of Home premium from torrent and it is saying Invalid serial.
Do you need an Acer OEM disc to use the key?

if so Will any OEM disc do or does it have to be acer.
secondly if so, does anyone have one that we could borrow or have a copy of?

Yes I believe so....There is a good chance the Pirated copy was blocked. Any OEM disk will load on a PC if it has the minimum specs

no no, he downloaded a retail copy of Home premium.
Does it need to be OEM?

Yep - an OEM key won't work with a retail version, and vice versa.

The key on the side of the machine wont work.
There is a generic key that can be used and it was probably the one previously used on your machine.

I've used one of these to install from scratch on a new HD when the old one died, just use the licence key you already have:

Search ebay for windows vista anytime upgrade
One there for £9.99, buy it now free p&p

Hope it helps :)

I bet it is NOT blank.

My guess is the files on it are hidden and they can only be found by the recovery program.

Have you actually tried to run the recovery disc?

If you follow the instructions in the documentation I bet it works.

Yep tried to run it, however the OS is not there to recover from so even if this was the case it would be useless as there is and never was a recovery partition either.

If he bought it new then the recovery partition WAS there, but again it was probably hidden.

I have had a laptop with a recovery partition which could not be "seen" by the various disk utilities provided by Windows, but it was still there.

You can download Acer recovery CDs from here, but it seems you have to pay for them

What happens when you press ALT + F10 during laptop start up?

That is supposed to start the recovery program.

You press enter at the "edit boot options" screen

Then select "restore to factory defaults"

This may help
