Insurance group 9 to 11

I am looking at selling my Vectra (B - 1.8 16v) with a view to buying a VW Sharan as I need something bigger. The vectra is in insurance group 9 and the Sharan in group 11 (specifically I have seen a gl 1.9 TDi).

Can I expect a significant increase in my insurance premium for moving up two groups?

Think I'll have to. Just hate getting all their junk email ... gonna set up a different mail account specifcally for the ******s.

You will find a bigger than expected increase due to the Sharan being a 7 seater - much higher risk, its not just a case of going up two groups

I've always wondered about that. I would have thought it would be obvious that someone moving to a 7 seater is probably because they need the extra room. And why ... kids or someone disabled? Surely that should equate less risk. I know since I had kids I drive SO much better than when I was a young, free, single chap ;-)

I wondered the same thing for me if we went from a galaxy group 12 to a xc90 group 15. I cant be bothered to put it through the comparison sites for the same reason as you but i think i will have too

Yep, but more chance of a distraction, more chance of someone getting injured in a crash etc.....

Best bet is definitely to try a comparison site, or pick a couple of insurers at random and see...

with a 7 seater the insurance company aren't going to see it as something thats going to get driven by irresponsible drivers, you don't see many boy racers driving people carriers

Have you ever seen ANY? :-)

I don't disagree with that, but insurance companies also assess everything by risk. More people in a car, more chance of someone getting injured = more chance of paying out. More people, more chance of someone doing something to distract the driver (kids misbehaving etc), results in accident = more chance of paying out.

That's why a 7 seater will go up in price.

You've really got to get some quotes - and try lots. I went from a 1.2l 16v Punto to a 2.8l V6 Galaxy, for an extra £30. Scandalous. I always shop around too, so I just don't understand it. It's not like the Punto insurance was steep!

I put my kids so far back they ar eno longer a distraction. Often I have to check I've actually put them in the car.

Just done a quote and its 150 more per year. But thats probably because I have 6 active points and 3 spent ones still within 5 years (just). But the increase is still within my budget.

Will shop around a bit more .. but that price was fully comp with Sainsburys.

Best not tell the insurance company :-p

How old are you? Two companies refused to insure me on the Galaxy, as I'm not thirty. Apparently no one under thirty has a need for such a car. I have three kids and a dobermann. I need the car. I tried Aviva, who I'd been avoiding as they're usually overpriced for me, but they had no problem with my age, and were cheapest by far. I hadn't even looked at the insurance question when we bought the car, so was proper shocked when they said 'we can't insure you on that'. I thought I'd made the biggest mistake of my life! (After getting the petrol and not the diesel version, that is.)

I'm 27 with 2 kids (7 and 1) and a third one on the way next month (thus the reason for needing something which fits 2 car seats and a booster seat in the back!!). I haven't had a problem finding people who will insure me, it's the price which has been high. Even though the Galaxy and the Sharan are basically the same car/engine, the Galaxy seems MUCH higher to insure.
