Hey, I'm a Canadian studying pharmacy up here in Liverpool.

As I am an international student, I don't really have any credit in this country.
I'm living in an apartment (was soo hard to get b/c of the credit check, ended up having to pay 6 months rent up front) and I have BT phone jacks in the wall.
I want to get Dry-DSL but England hasn't caught up to the rest of the world yet in terms of that, so I've been told I have to dish out 125 pounds to "activate" the line then get stuck in a hideous contract for internet.

On top of that, I only stay in england like 7 months out of the year.

Anyone know the cheapest way I can get DSL?

I've already gone to T-mobile to get one of those mobile broadband things, but I was rejected as I have no credit... Companies here just don't seem to like money... I offered to prepay the whole contract too!

New build and virgin isn't available!

You could try getting a virgin media package... I get broadband, landline & tv for £25 a month :)

If the BT line is already installed it should only cost £10 to reconnect, I think they are trying to fob you off there somewhat. I'm sure there are 'pay as you go' type broadband suppliers where you pay upfront by month. Check out www.broadband.co.uk

unless its a new-build or never been connected

Another issue is.
If I dish out the 125, I'm leaving in May and will be back in September. I will most likely be living in the same building but somewhere else, would I be able to keep an account with BT and not have to pay the ridiculous 125 connection charge?

You probably have to pay the ridiculous charge. Your choices are expensive, either satellite or via a 3g mobile phone. Although the credit rating may be an issue, I must say 3 mobile are usually desperate for new customers.

Failing everything else Liverpool have a fantastic library and several internet cafe's, both will have dsl connections.

you have edited your first post, so is that a yes its a new build?

you have to pay the one off connection if it has never been connected before. If you then move to another room , another new room with a dfferent connection then yes you will have to do this again, also you have to pay for a year with bt

You could get Bulldog for £1 connection for new line but customer service is bad and its a 12 month contract

PMSL, you are getting brave. I would have thought you had been drinking but I doubt you can afford to now so I will take it as a compliment, thanks;-)

Just get a wireless card for your PC & "borrow" the internet from your neighbours.

Mod Edit:perhaps not such a good idea on HUKD

Looks like BT is going to get $124.99 from me :(

BT Phone line = 3month contract the start otherwise 7days notice.

www.zenadsl.com one of the best rolling contract ISP :)

www.samknows.com > availability checker and put your phoneline or neighbours phoneline and post code into that to find out what is available to you

All Bt lines are 12 months minimum now

If you get caught using it you could be looking at 12 months without a laptop but a communal pc with a lot of guys that want to be your friend.

I know three people that regulary use their ubiquiti laptop pc cards to hack other peoples ****** WEP networks without trouble, to actively pursue such a policy like that would cost hundreds of millions tbh, it ain't happening, those are small/rare cases.

I personally am not bothered if something is illegal or not, my comments were made to protect the site owners .. who may be liable for such postings. I care about the site.;-)
#27
As already pointed out, it's illegal and not good advice. However, if you get on well with the neighbours, perhaps they would give permission for you to use their connection.
#28
Your best bet is to do it via a Three or T-mobile. I know someone who is moving around so basically just connects their T-mobile phone to the computer via USB and it connects to the net, same as the 3G idea but no broadband modem. Its not got a lengthy contract and can cancel it whenever.

Id look into that if i were you
#29
I'm using Three on my cell and I have hooked up my N95 to the internet and used it through my laptop, but, Three restricts soo many websites... I can't goto most Canadian websites. :( T-mobile already rejected me based on credit check even when I offered to prepay for the whole year!
