I'm going to a villa in Spain and want access to the internet from my laptop which I'll be taking. Can some kind person please explain what options I have? It would be nice to have something like pay as you go which I would be able to use whenever I go away - 5 times a year max.

Thanks.

Id first try and find out if there are any spanish mobile network operators do anything like the Three payg mobile broadband, if you have a newish phone (supporting 3g, hsdpa access) they can often be connected to a laptop by bluetooth or data cable and used as a modem, once you have found a network, sim cards for spain(and other countries) can be found on ebay http://tinyurl.com/67ewj4

A
final note: If your villa is in a main resort the signal should be fine, however if its in a village away from main areas the signal may be poor/non-existant.

You'll probably find a wireless network that you can use :whistling:.

So I can use my phone and don't need anything like this then? I've got a SE K800i on O2.

I'm staying at Tres Calas near Ametlla de Mar (30 mins down the coast from Salou), which looking at Googlemap, seems to be a seaside village made up entirely of holiday villas.

vixygwim, I'm hoping that might be the case ... especially if I've got to pay by the minute using my mobile phone! :? I can't see me using it much, if that's the case.

Looks like it will work no problems although you will probably need to get the phone unlocked to accept a local sim.

Plenty of advice available http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=k800i+modem&btnG=Search&meta=<<<

In theory yes, but the charges for using it abroad mean that you really don't want to.

In spain it looks like it's £3 per megabyte: http://www.three.co.uk/personal/help_support_/abroad_/pay_monthly_country_details.omp?cid=31846

Thanks for your help everyone. Looks like I'll carry it around with me everywhere hoping to find free wi-fi if using my mobile is going to end up costing a fortune!

Thats why i suggested getting a local simcard from ebay! http://tinyurl.com/685gfx

Orange, vodafone and movistar all seem to support 3g and the higher broadband speeds.

Sorry, I'm a real dumb blonde on this but have you got any idea how much for example 30 minutes of surfing the net (checking email, browsing forums, clicking links to enter competitions etc) would cost?

Off the top of my head I havent got a clue but if its comparable to what I get on three PAYG its £10 a month. I'll investigate for you more tomorrow when i am conscious - lol, ive only just noticed your username is my mini me's name, well what i call him anyway, its Travis Jorge but he gets called T-J more often than not!

Thanks for all your help Harltzer. :) I had in my mind a figure of about £30/£40 and I'd like 30 mins/an hours surfing per day for the two weeks - if that's unrealistic, please don't spend time researching because I don't think I could justify much more than that for my addiction, I'll just have to go cold turkey or find free wi-fi somewhere!

I'm known as TJ too and my mini-me's initials are also TJ but it's never caught on with him.
