you could try it via USB then that would determine its as simple as the ethernet port is naffed on your modem or not. Also have your checked your ethernet port on your PC is not disabled?

I wouldnt expect any help from Virgin!

So can you explain what you are doing? When you say connect the ethernet cable to the modem, please clarify. Are you using the modem and plugging into the phone line for dialup, or are you trying to connect to a Ethernet hub? You do realise the modem and ethernet ports are different dont you?

What error messages are you getting?

Your description of the problem is to too vague.

My friend bought her laptop from Dell, and I know a little about PC's but not an extensive knowledge. However we spent all night trying to get her wireless working to no avail. She then phoned one of those £1 per minute helplines and after 20 minutes they determined that a switch under her battery casing was not switched on, thus rendering the wireless useless. She switched it on and it worked straight away. First time I had ever heard of anything so stupid, but worth a look!!!

A strange place to hide the wireless adaptor switch. You would use this to disable the wireless adaptor to save on battery power.
