Internet question for you techy fellas...and ladies of course!

Setting up an NC10 for the old man and when I have typed in the network key it keeps coming up as 'aquiring address' for ages, and it's not connecting. What am I doing wrong. The key is correct, I have double checked.

You don't say what OS you have installed. (I'll assume Vista or XP) Try re-booting first. Then if that doesn't work go into your network connections and DISABLE the wireless adaptor. Then ENABLE it. (right clicking on the icon will give you the options).

Have you tried right clicking the connection icon in the taskbar tray and select REPAIR? Hope one of these works for you.

assuming it is Windows - if the above don't work check the wifi card drivers. Not sure what wifi card is in teh NC10 but you should check the card manufacturers site for the latest drivers.

I have had to lappys in recent weeks that would not hold a connection but updating the drivers sorted it.

Yep - router restart good idea - unplug and wait at least 10 secs before starting it up again

Checked all that, although haven't restarted the router. Funny thing is it works on my own NC10 no probs. Will try a restart. TTFN!

Checked all of that (except the drivers, how do you do that?) Still no joy. Restarted the router as well.

Had the same problem recently, uninstall the wireless driver and restart. On start up XP will reinstall the driver and it should work.

then im pretty sure theres something wrong with your internet to be certain do you have any other laptops or desktops which can be connected via ethernet as if they dont work also then its deffo your internet service provider who you need get in touch with.:thinking:

Im using the router on another lappy to ask these questions so I don't think its the provider.

Just to make sure I do the right thing should I go through control panel, uninstall Atheros WLAN client and then shut down and restart?

Do it through device manager and control panel. Uninstall the device, the driver and the software but ensure you have the CD/drivers ready to re-install before you do this.

Oh and don't forget...

Press FN+F9 on the laptop (this turns on/off the wireless) there should be a little light that comes on/off on the laptop when you toggle this on/off.

i had this problem then i realised the wep key has been reset - reset the wep key and try is again

In device manager determine which atheros wifi card you have then get the latest drivers here

as mentioned earlier unistal the wifi card in device manager and reistal using the latest driver

This is doing my head in now! I have the CD's to do any re-installing, although I don't have a cd drive! Anyone else have any ideas?

Yep, it was on. I am going through the repair wireless connections thing now and it just stays on 'renewing your IP address'

Other than telling you to manually set the IP I do not know what else to try.

I posted the link to a guide on how you do it on the 1st page.

You mentioned already having a computer working, so it should be pretty easy.

Just go to the working one, open up the start menu, locate run/search box and type "cmd" then press enter.
In the black window that has now opened type "ipconfig" and push enter.

You should get something like this:

Now go to the machine that is not working, go to the wireless device properties (use the guide on page1)
Locate the TCP/IP properties and enter the same details, just changing the IP address.

So from the above picture we would get this:
IP Address:130.126.112.50 (add one to the last number, each IP has to be unique)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.254.0
Default Gateway: 130.126.112.1

Prefered DNS Server: 130.126.112.1
Alternate DNS Server: blank


This will bypass the Renewing IP Address message and the Aquiring Network Address message. Both will already have been manually set.

Right, I am pretty sure I have sorted the problem out with thanks to PhearFactor (rep on it's way). When I was typing in the IP address something really weird happened. When I typed in the new IP address the number '0' wouldn't work. I found out that the Fn key was down and I think it must be jammed (which is why my Network Key wouldn't work. Looks like it's got to go back, unless there's something else simple to fix going on...

If you cannot get 0 (zero) to work on the keyboard and the wireless key has 0's in it, that would explain it for sure lol.

You can always use the onscreen keyboard to type it out though.

Start menu run/search type "osk.exe" and press enter :thumbsup:

Or locate it via, Start menu, all programs> accessories> ease of acces> on-screen keyboard.

Oh no, im now getting an 'IP address conflict with another system on the network message coming up on my working laptop! Arrrgggh, what now?
