After finding lots of helpful tips in the HTC Desire owners thread, I thought I would start one for iPad owners on HUKD.

What do you think of the iPad? What accessories do you have? What apps are worth a try?

Anyone who makes idiotic comments like the above needs more than their head looking at.

I take my iPhone with me, so it must fit in my pocket. At home, when I'm watching TV or not wanting to wait to turn the computer on, the iPad's large screen, easy UI and instant-on ability means its a great choice.

Then again, you're just an idiotic troll and I've fallen for it. Oh well.

OP - I have the official apple case and no screen protector at the mo.

I want one but not too sure about taking it about with me.

Seen a guy in town the other day with his in a nice white pouch but I was thinking "what if this guy gets mugged"

Edit: or maybe I should be in the "I want to be an owner of an iPad" Thread

It's basically a netbook with 1/10th of the features.

Just got mine last week - really chuffed with this bit of tech. It is really quick and easy to use when laptop off, and kids just want to play a game on a larger scree. Yet to take out with me, but looking forward to train journeys where iphone is just to small to enjoy a movie and macbook is too large to comfortably sit on my lap squeezed into my seat to watch. Not impressed with iPad haters - if you want to make snide remarks, why not do it in a separate thread, and not spoil this thread, as I'm hoping to gain and share loads of really useful ideas.

Maybe he has a desktop PC and wants to sit on the couch and browse the internet. Should he balance the desktop next to him on the couch, rest the keyboard and monitor on his knee and use a dinner plate as a mouse pad.

Or he could just use his iPad.

Chump.

Not read any comments but I imagine in this owners thread there are people not owning one commenting negatively?

I wonder if there was a tampon users thread, they'd comment to say pads were better...

LOL @ the trolls in this thread.

Before I won one, I said I'd never have bought one.

Now I've used it for a while - I 100% would buy one.
#15
Not being rude but why should anyone buy one, whats the benefits?

I'm not being a hater as i own a iphone 4 im just looking for pro's and cons really.
#16
Funny how threads containing apple products seem to attract trolls who can't afford them. I am not a huge apple fan tbh. I have the HTC desire and prefer it to the iPhone.

The iPad is great in the coffee shop, or at uni. saves dragging around a big laptop. plus the battery life is incredible!

Apps wise, I love x plane 9....can't believe how well a flight sim works on this device! Pages is a great word processor, which can export .doc files. touchgrind is pretty addictive too. Just noticed too, that tv catch up have launched an iPad service which works well.

The only accessory I have at the mo, is a griffin leather pouch. I thought the official apple one looked a little too flimsy, or am I wrong? Does anyone think you actually need a screen protector on this? It's not like a phone or an mp3 player that will loose in a pocket.

Would you buy it at its current price though?

I agree that it has its place in the market, but for me, it's horrendously overpriced.

Oh and this is going to turn into a real hate fest! 8)

still getting used to this new layout on the forum, is there an ignore button for the troll in this thread, and if so where is it?

My macbook switches on in seconds, just close it when finished and it goes into sleep mode, open it back up and i can be surfing in literally seconds, i'd rather pay the extra and buy another macbook before considering the iPad unless someone can convince me????

You get the following:
- Bragging rights
- Get called a fan boy
- Get bullied on websites
- Get told to buy a netbook

Seriously though from what I have seen it's intuituve, bigger and better screen than most netbooks, offers more functionality, looks good and boots up quite quick. You can sync with iphone and macbook.
From my "job" it would be perfect as I am constantly getting my netbook out to show clients stuff but an Ipad would solve this and be far better (screen size and on screen keyboard) but it's the price that puts me off.
I have never owned an iphone but had an ipod (didn't like it, prefer sony walkman) but the Ipad has a strong base to use it properly, It might not be as small as a netbook but by god it's better looking and it's annoys people so much.
#22
Agreed that the price is high. you can't have an iPad and do without a laptop, but it is great for browsing, playing games, watching movies, e-mails, note taking and I am sure other things I haven't tried yet
#23
Air Display is a nifty app if you have macbook or imac. It uses your iPad as a second display. Heres a pic : (p.s my ipad is set to low brightness.)

I always find it funny when people trot out the old 'you can't afford it' line... it's a £700 piece of tech, hardly a massive investment!

I got bored of holding it at an angle and typing with one hand or being hunched over it, i could buy an istand i suppose but it kind of ruins the point... anyway i didn't think much of it and prefer a netbook but each to thier own i suppose.

Fair enough. This thread was meant to be for iPad owners, to share their opinions of it, and discuss different apps and accessories. Before I bought the HTC Desire, I found the owners thread on this forum very informative. It meant that when I got it I knew what case to buy, where to get it, and what apps I should download

I have a 16GB 3G iPad.

yup i was one of the idiots (listed above) who slagged off the iPad at first.

got one, changed my focus on it completely, i love it.

mines jailbroken and i use no protector (screen) I use the official case, although personally dont think its worth its price tag.
#29
I just bought a screen protector from eBay. It was under £3 for 2 so I will give them a try and report back. I bet I get loads of air bubbles and ruin the look of the screen.

Also considering getting mi-fi from 3 as I bought the iPad without 3G. It's cheaper than paying the extra hundred for the iPad, and you can use it for more than one device. Now to find a cheap deal

If you ever get air bubbles on a screen protector always leave it overnight, most times there are tiny airholes which over a few hours will let the trapped air out leaving your screen protector in perfect condition.
#31
Good tip. If there are air bubbles, I normally just rip off the screen protector! When I try the iPad one, I will leave it over night

Its always goin to be 3 types of people when PC vs Mac comes up.

Those who think Windows/PCs are the norm and therefore only buy that.

Those who don't want to follow the crowd and think they are better than everyone else so buy a Mac.

Those who buy a PC because they don't want to follow the Mac crowd and slate it because they are "so much more knowledgeable in the world of technology and "Mac use parts that were so last year"

Android clan thinking they have a device better than an iphone is a fine example.
#33
I don't really fit into any of those categories. I buy a PC because all of the software I have is compatible with it, and I prefer it. The iPad offers something different. I also think (as did tech radar) that the Desire was a better phone than the 3GS iPhone. At the time I bought. Y android phone iPhone 4 wasn't around.

Thats my point. The Desire is not a better phone but to avoid folling the Apple club they force their opinion to be in favour of other devices and then go about trying to justify this.

No phone is anywhere near the iPhone overall. Sad but true.

Think the iPad is a marmite thing. Everything in that link is 100% true, but i still leave my laptop behind some days and get by with my iPad.
#38
Right, tried putting one of those cheap screen protectors on. As predicted because of the size, it was impossible to line it up. I was also left with far too many air bubbles. Just going to have to be careful with the screen.

Here's my genuine reply - you may disagree, but its my opinion...

First, I can’t easily load my Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents on the iPad or access the year or more of e-mails that I carry around on my 32 GB USB drive. The iPad has no USB port, and its means of transferring documents—through iTunes—is pathetic. Apple’s cloud strategy seems to be centered on iTunes. This is fine for buying movies and music, but not good for document management and retrieval. Yes, there are apps that provide a drop-box service. But I have thousands of research papers and other documents that I need to be able to search and retrieve; a drop box doesn’t provide what I need.

I don't want to load word docs or excel on my ipad. The on screen keyboard is good, but not good enough for long doc typing etc. The USB port thing IS annoying, but no biggy for me personally. iTunes is in indeed pathetic though.

Second, Apple’s Microsoft Office-like products on the iPad are just cheap imitations. Apple’s Pages is a decent word processor, and Numbers is okay as a spreadsheet manager, but these don’t hold a candle to Microsoft Word and Excel. Moreover, I can’t use the excellent cloud-based word processing tools that Zoho offers, or the decent tools in Google docs. The iPad doesn’t recognize the rich-text format that these applications use, so it doesn’t display a keyboard when you try to type.

I agree. Though there was talk microsoft was going to make office for ipad at some point. For me though - pointless, I don't use it for serious stuff.

Third, I usually need to view different applications in multiple screens when I am writing. I want to have my web browser appear in a split screen next to my text editor, and I want to be able to jump between applications—just as I do on my Mac and in Windows. The multi-tasking in iOS 4 allows me to listen to music as I work, but doesn’t do much more for me.

Partially agree, but then a netbook doesn't really offer a lot more due to screen size. It's not meant to completely replace a laptop or desktop.

Fourth, on many of the websites I visit, I can’t watch Flash presentations. I am tired of the blue legos telling me that Flash isn’t supported.

100% agreement. flash is not overly important to me, but I sure miss it on the bbc news site for example.

Last, I didn’t miss the camera that didn’t come with my iPad until I got my new iPhone, but now I can’t fathom why it isn’t there. Facetime, on the new iPhone, is a killer app. It changes the way you use your phone and the way you communicate with your friends and relatives. The iPad lets you make Skype calls over Wi-Fi, but there is no Facetime app—and that’s because there is no camera.

I have absolutely no use for a camera on my ipad.

Personally I think the OP was either expecting too much from an ipad, or misunderstood what is was.

A lot of issues he mentions should already be clear before he bought the product.

No camera, no support for flash etc
