iPad prices released

the 429 isnt a bad starting price, for an apple product anyways.
#3
....ouch

Ouch at the extra hundred for 3G. Surely the 3G chip doesn't cost that much...
#5
Lol...
#6
I'm surprised they haven't added a £100 for the apple logo...oh yeah, they have!
banned#7
The difference in price between the disk sizes isn't proportional to memory costs either.

They should have just done two models. A 16gb WiFi only and a 64gb including 3g.
#8
Stupidly expensive.

His is in a list form and is much easier to read at a glance :)

Stupid money. Could have a very nicely spec'ed laptop for £700, or a decent netbook for <£250 that are more functional than this, with greater storage.

I will stick with my pocket ipad.

I saw somebody using (what I presume was a US) model on a tube on the London Underground last week.

Pleasant-looking piece of kit, but I wouldn't start using it in a public place like a tube. Far too risky with a knock or jolt from either another passenger or the driver!

Although I've read the specifications & noted the dimensions it surprised me how big it was in the owner's hand (assuming the user didn't have unfeasibly small hands, of course!). Very clear display though. The iPad; not the hands.

I doubt I'll bother. In fact, I am so disillusioned with my iPhone 3GS that as soon as my 18 cellular service contract expires I'll be getting rid of it. I was hoping that the iPad & a cheap mobile telephone handset could replace it, but at the prices released it is just far too expensive to consider. I may as well just buy a sub-£200 10.something-inch Notebook instead.

Is anybody considering buying an iPad?

I have made a handy list for the inevitable “Apple haters” that pop up in these threads. To save your fat fingers some time, all you have to do is copy and paste one of the following into your reply:

• I hate Apple (and also apples because I am fat)
• Apple make terrible products that are terrible
• I hate anything popular because it is cool to do so. Also, I am 12.
• Y wud U want a ipad wen u can get a pc four £200 frm tescos?
• I heard an iPod once and it sounded terrible.
• My Kronk-200g-Hahn-Blast-Gammer MP3 player is far superior and the sound quality is like angels farting in my ears. It cost me £3,000. (PS. I don’t actually own one, I just want to sound superior to you)

I'd like one, but can't really justify buying one as I don't really NEED one.

where is lewt? how much did he pay again for his?

I think the display would be the thing that makes people love it and buy it for movies and web browsing while sitting on the bed or couch.. it may take a few months for apps to take off and make it special. Im a hard core apple lover and hav a mbp and an iphone, but I dont think its worth buying an ipad it unless it a necessity for the lifestyle OR you have some £ to waste.

Serious question, boothy: What advantages does it have (for you)?

DJ1
I'd like one, but can't really justify buying one as I don't really NEED one. .

I, too, would like one... and probably don't need one, as you said, DJ1, but as a mobile 'phone platform I am finding the iPhone's (current) operating flawed & buggy.

As mentioned above, though, it is hard to justify the price when alternate products are available.

Thank you (both) for your further comments.

Though for movies the screen isn't wide screen.....

I like Apple stuff, but this is a really expensive toy. You need another computer (ironically, this could be one of the netbooks Steve jobs critisised in his ipad keynote), in order to be able to sync content to the ipad.

If this had an OSX operating system, it may have been worth £429, but not with an iphone OS.

And why are Apple so stingey with storage ? The ipad is being touted as an all singing all dancing media device, but at the starting model's 16gb, you'd fill it with 3 movies. Pointless.

heres a good use for them get a set of 4 to put your dinnerplate on

While sitting on the bed / couch I prefer to watch the higher resolution better sounding TV. I can also watch it with other members of my family.

Display
9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit glossy widescreen Multi-Touch display with IPS technology

Translated that means a large area of optical glass that will crack/smash/shatter [insert words as appropriate to reflect an expensive fragile item that simply doesnt justify the cost].

Good luck to those who shell out for it. You wont use it that often. Lets face it, its not something that you would carry around with you on a daily basis. And if you do take it out with you then 1) Those who will be looking at at you will be laffin and muttering some profanities about you, and 2) You will only be taking it out with you because of the 'image' factor.

And for those who keep it in their home. Are you really going to sit and play with your iPad all day given that you will most probably already have an ipod touch, iphone, PC, laptop, netbook and some top of the range non-Apple phone?

To summarise. Waste of money.

Waste of your money, not others. I know loads of people who want one and a fair few who will buy one on launch.

You must be using very large dinnerplates if you need 4 iPads for one plate.

Yet again us Brits get ripped off American prices at today's rate are

Wifi

16 gig 332

32 gig 399

64 gig 466

3g and wi fi in same order

16 gig 419

32 gig 486

64 gig 552

that's in £

Also we must have a better 3g chip as their price difference between wi fi and 3g is only 87 quid equivalent

Sort it out apple!!!!

This type of thing isn't the sole reserve of Apple you know. Most products are cheaper over in the States.

Because thats one major way of control. Also NAND memory is expensive. If you optimise your movies for the ipad you will find you have enough for a fair few films. So for a 21:9 film you would encode it to 1024x438 and strip off the DD or DTS and only use the stereo stream.

What they could have done under still in an overly controlling manner is made it able to be tethered with an ipod clasic. This would then mean you buy more apple products and you would have 160gb for media storage and Mr Jobs still has control of your life!

Yeah, you could encode movies to a lesser standard (using your other proper computer), but I was just trying to make the point that as a device that's only good for media playback, 16gb is woefully short of what's needed, at a very high price.

I think even the most hardened of Apple fans will agree with you on that.

You forgot "This device is pointless and that comes from an Apple fan (to show I'm not a biased but really I am)"

I'm glad I did the right thing by importing one from US last month! I paid £420 that is including Delivery, Insurance, Customs Duty & 'freaking' RoyalMail Handling Charges! And oh yea, I got it 1 month before the official UK launch date & saved myself £9 .. lol! :) Yay!
