My mates screwed up her Iphone. The phone will not power up past the apple logo. It just asked for it to be connected to itunes. She had it unlocked at a shop. She then tried to restore to factory settings (for some reason). The shop she had it unlocked at will not look at it so shes asked me to. I've tried restoring with Itunes using DFU mode but had no luck. Comes up with the error "the iphone iphone could not be restored (1015). I've had a look around the internet for help but had no luck. Was really hoping one of you kinda people would be willing to help. Just to add, the phones out of warranty so she cant just take it back.

This may sound random, I had the same issue, and the only way I could get the OS to reinstall was to get an Apple shop to do it on a Mac. Worked fine after, it didn't work with XP/Win7 or vista.
Another reason I'm moving to android when the dual core phones come out

Im using Windows 7. Thats crazy if it is that which is stopping me from restoring it.

How long ago was it unlocked? If it's been unlocked by using the ipad modem baseband it won't restore to factory settings.

You could try redsn0w and use a custom ipsw, have a read here

The IPSW's i could find had some kinda DMG format that is a Mac format. Maybe im just not understanding it all. Ive downloaded what i think is the correct IPSW from several sites and Redsn0w does'nt find the file it needs. Maybe its beyond me :-p lol.

I'm guessing she tried jailbreaking it, when I downgraded my iphone to 4.1 I was in the same place as you and it was stuck on the 'Connect to itunes' page, but I used tinyumbrella to kick it out and it was fine, if it was on firmware 4.2 and you tried jailbreaking it via redsn0w you will have to reboot via redsn0w but if you do that you won't be able to switch your phone off, as that will trigger the same problem

You can only restore to the current IOS software which is 4.2.1, Apple only signs the current firmware any other custom or old firmware will come up with a communications error.

Follow this link to download the latest firmware for the 3Gs.

Connect to computer, start i-tunes, with phone switched off press power and home button, after a short period of time once computer has recognised new device, release power button but keep home button pressed until drivers start to install, then release home button.
I-Tunes should then say something along the lines of phone needs to be restored. I-Tunes should go to I-Phone summary page, whilst holding shift button click on restore. It should then allow you to browse for firmware file location. Select downloaded copy of IOS 4.2.1 firmware, i-tunes should then verify this with Apple and will then restore phone to IOS 4.2.1. and it will be set up as a new phone, so all data and settings will be lost.

You will then have the option to restore phone using previous back-up, this should put all of your apps, music and data and settings back on the phone. However it will no longer be jailbroken.

I hope this helps. See Redmond Pie for details

If you got it unlocked at a store apple wont touch it as the warranty is now void it had to be unlocked officially by her network provider. I bought an iphone4 on friday for £340 was locked to 02 put an o2 sim in it with £15 quid i got a txt saying it it's now unlocked today after filling in a request form to get it unlocked on friday.

You should have got it unlocked genuinely from o2 or apple. U e had that problem, the thing I WOuld have suggested is to put into DFU mode. Hold power button down for 3 seconds then hold the home button together for 10-13 seconds then release the power button and keep held the home button for 10seconds

Cheers for the help guys.

Still not having any luck. I tried the holding shift on Itunes restore to load the IPSW from my desktop. It comes up with the same error and fails. I did manage to get Redsn0w to start loading the IPSW but it gets stuck at the Installing Activation Bundles point. Got any ideas?

Are you using a sim from the network the phone was originally locked to?
You could try replacing the lockdown folder (for activation) with a patched one using ifunbox if it'll let you into the phone. (keep and replace the original if it doesn't work)

Have you tried to boot in owned dfu from redsn0w before holding shift in iTunes and installing a custom 4.1 ipsw?

I had the same problem recently (well same error code anyway also just circling on apple logo). Seems a relatively easy fix. Did you save your hashes using either cydia or tiny umbrella?. The procedure below worked for me I cannot guarantee it will work for you but you can give it a go.

1) Download ireb
http://ih8sn0w.com/index.php/products/view/ireb.snow

2) Install and run and follow the on screen guide (may take a few goes to get it right). It basically puts your phone into pwned state and it should bypass any errors thrown by itunes. Once completed, shut down ireb and use itunes to update/restore your iphone.

3) Start itunes ( I used itunes version 10.0.1.22) and it should find the iphone in recovery mode. Now you can click restore and upgrade your phone (please note I had my hashes saved and I opted for a shift-restore)

Note if you require firmware for the shift restore option please go to:
http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
and find the required firmware from the second drop down menu.
**For shift restore to work do not forget to add the saurik server ip address to the itunes host file**

I really hope this works for you and feel free to ask me if you get stuck!

SteJosh--
Firmware with baseband 06.15.00 is a bad move. Apparently some people have issues with gps functionality and other bits and pieces. At the moment you cannot downgrade to a proper baseband. The good news is that apparently the dev team are working on a baseband downgrade (not sure of what the progress is for that). Also try not to use the pre-activated firmware (if it is the pre-activated firmware you are using) as it keeps searching for an activation certificate or something its called this in turn greatly reduces the battery life. Anyway, in order to unlock I believe you can use ultrasnow for baseband 06.15.00 available from cydia (after installing the ultrasn0w repo). Good luck and give ultrasnow a go. Again if you have any problems feel free to ask for advice.

yeah does look like a bad move. To be honest tho it looks as if shes given up on the phone. its more of a project now lol. Ive got it all working fine on its original network. I install Cydia, boot it up with it in tethered mode. When i install Ultrasn0w it requires a reboot. When it reboots it gets stuck on the apple logo again. back to square one. I'll keep playing.

Cheers :)

Yeah I think because it's jailbroken tethered when it reboots it crashes. I think the best thing to do is to wait for an untethered jailbreak which shouldn't be too long now. I remember reading somewhere about running a version of redsnow which gives you the option to run in tethered mode again once the device is rebooted (this may solve your boot problem). Good luck with your project!!

Cheers,

Ive managed to unlock it now. The only problem is that it ONLY boots up when tethered. Any ideas?

Edit: nevermind im being stupid, they have only done a tethered unlock atm

Hi SteJosh. What steps exactly did you do to get the iphone back to the factory setting stage (before it was unlocked). I am having the exact same problem as your friend. I was given new iphone 3gs with 4.2 as a Christmas present. I tried to jailbreak it but messed it up, so took it to a phone shop to restore and unlock for me which they did all for £70.. that was bad enough. I then asked Orange to transfer my blackberry plan to iphone plan which they did, only I still couldn't get on the internet or use internet based app or whatapps etc.. unless I was in wireless area. Orange advised me to reset network settings as I was getting the updates. This didn't work, so they said to restore in itunes (the phone shop said I wouldn't ever have problems with restoring or upgrade as their lock was permanent). Guess what.. yep.. I get the error 1015, there was an error restoring. I am flying to Italy tonight so had no choice but to take it to the phone shop.. and yep.. you guessed it.. they are charging me another £20.00 to restore it. They are treating me like a mug.. I work in IT so I am livid as I should be able to do this myself... they keep saying it is a problem with the actual phone (it is brand new out of the box). I said if it is a problem with the phone.. how come when you send it away.. they manage to fix it. If you tell me what software they are using (which suggests it isn't a physical problem with the phone), I can do it myself, instead of them keep making money out of me.. They said they don't know.. they had to pay themselves.. and that's why they charged me. This is all getting too much now.. as the flippin thing was a present and I seem to keep paying out for the blasted thing.. I wouldn't mind, but I was an avid Blackberry user (supporting for the last 8 years in IT also), no problems whatsoever.. I have always hated Apple but thought I would I give it a go... help please. :)
