There is little difference cosmetically, The 2G has a mirrored metal back plate on it, whereas the 3G is black glossy plastic (unless yu opt for a white iphone of course!). The main and most important difference is the 3G capabilities of the err 3G, allowing a greater speed of data download / web browsing etc. Also there is the inclusion of a GPS which is a very nice feature for route planning etc. There are more and more apps coming out which take advantage of the GPS for gaming, travel, shopping etc etc. There is of course a maps feature included in the phone. I would go for the 3G model as it is simply more future-proof. There are of course a MILLION sites about iphone tweaks/unlocking.jailbreakin etc etc, not sure if you're planning this but here is a great site with some good tips / guides.http://www.iclarified.com/tutorials/iphone/index.php I never thought I would turn into a "fanboy", but I genuinely enjoy owning mine, it's almost a way of life and basically a small computer. Good luck and post back if you want any further info.

beware hippoface, apple are very good at keeping secrets, and the understanding is the new 3rd gen iphone is currently being mass produced for a announcement in June, and sale in July.....

I suspect some clearance/better deals on the current 2ng gen then.

Am i right in saying, iphones come on o2?
This jailbreaking is it just another word for unlocking the iphone?

Cheers mate, yeah i know apple are a bit naughty like that.
It doesnt have to be the latest spec, however i think the 3g would be the way forward for me.

"legally" on 02 only in the UK yes.
Jailbreaking means opening the phone up so you can install 3rd party sottware / appz/ games etc on the phone, rather than ONLY being able to install via the Apple app Store

Unlocking is different, and means of course you can use other networks, t-mobile etc.

It all depends what you're after to be honest. If you are going for a new contract one, then you may have to go for an o2 contract or pay&go. If however, you wish to go down the unlock route, it would be better, and cheaper, to buy a second hand one; or even an already unlocked one. You can pick these up for just shy of £300 for a good nick 8gb if you're lucky. Just be careful as ***only some*** can be unlocked at this time and you dont want to end up with a "brick".

edit: do have a read of the iClarified site, link above. It really is an awesome resource / FAQ.

I'd most likely buy a second hand one.

What do you mean by what is in bold?
I wouldnt need to unlock, as i am currently on o2?
Would this matter?

If youre planning to use on o2 you will be ok. If you were changing to say, Orange or another network; you would need an iphone running a particular version of the Iphone software, as the latest official Apple update will NOT unlock using the known methods. As I say, you will be fine if you plan to use with o2.

Okay cheers.

I don't think you'll need to avoid if you're going down the 02 way. If you buy locally, might be worth testing your sim card before you hand over your hard earned though. Also, a lot of people seem to want to go for the 16gb model. I personally have the 8gb (my 2nd one), which is more than enough storage space for songs etc, and obviously they are cheaper than the 16gb ones to buy! This is something that's a personal choice of course. Let's say an average mp3 is 4mb or so, then you can fit 2,000 on. This is more than enough for me, just depends how big your music collection is, and if you plan to get movies etc too. Best of luck!

p.s. I would go for a screen protector too, these can be picked up for literally 2 quid or so, well worth it to protect that nice screen!

1. they are pretty good on the go under 3G mode. Perfectly acceptable browsing the net etc ( remember they have wifi too so you can browse at great speed if there is a wifi hotspot / at home etc)
2.what can go wrong?.well hopefully nothing if you look after it ( case & cover ). I've owned 2 now and an ipod touch and had absolutely no problems at all with mine.
3. as a phone they are great. The interface is nice, BIG keys, customisable ring tones / picture contacts. Texting is brilliant as they appear like conversation bubbles See here for screenshots and key features http://www.apple.com/uk/iphone/features/sms.html
