iPhone help desparately required!

Hi folks - some much needed advice is desparately needed from you knowledgeable peeps!

I am deliberating on getting an iPhone. My current 12 month o2 contract doesn't run out for another 5 months.

Went to the local o2 shop to be told that I can buy a PAYG iPhone 3G transfer my current tariff for an iPhone tariff and everything should be hunkey-dorey. Phoned o2 customer services and they told me that this was not possible as my contract is a 12 month one and the iPhone tariffs are 18 month contracts ie. non-transferrable.

Went to the Carphone Warehouse today and they said that I will be unable to surf the internet if I stick my current o2 contract sim card into a PAYG iPhone 3G as the sim cards for iPhones are of a different type?! He did mention that I could overcome this by unlocking the iPhone but he didn't really explain it any further.

I am now COMPLETELY confused!!!

Can anyone tell me the best, cheapest way that I can get my current standard o2 contract sim card to work in an iPhone whilst having the unlimited data/web/wifi, etc?

Many thanks in advance!

The answer is dependent on what contract you have now.

Can you give some more details?

buy a 2g 1 then you can do whatever you want

Except if I am reading right he is trying to figure out a way to use his sim card and get unlimited data - if that is true, then it makes no difference 3G or 2G.

By the way if you'd like a 16GB 2G unlocked I've got one! And I'm about to put it up for sale - sorry for the shameless plug!

you saw an oportunity and you took it:thumbsup: how much by the way?

Well CEX in Ipswich have offered £246, but I was there for the day, and its 40 miles away so £255 delivered I'm guessing.

May be very interested in that mate!

I am currently on o2 40 - which is 600 mins and 500 msgs a month for a 12 month contract

Would this sim card be able to work in an iPhone regardless of it being 2 or 3G? The unlimited web browsing is a must and so would need this to be included as well - any help would be gratefully appreciated!

the sim card is NOT different at all. It SIMply has 3G and GPRS / EDGE date enabled on its IMEI number through O2. You can buy the PAYG phone, ring up your o2 contract people and ask for the unlimited data bolt on and hey presto. You will have everything working hunky dory.

You wont go back after owning an iphone.

Its just that I've been told so many contrasting and contradicting things by so-called "experts" that I'm just quite dubious!

So what you have explained - will this definitely work?

A sim card does not have an imei number, only a imsi number but neither have any relevance to the question.

If you was to buy a 2g iphone (the old one) you could pop your current sim card in and it should work without having to do anything else. You may have to jailbreak the iphone if it is not activated, even so it is very easy now days to do so.

Your current sim card will work in the 3g, its completely untrue what the guy at CPW has said about the sims being different and he said you can over come this by unlocking the 3g iphone? The 3g iphone cant be unlocked yet.

Either way if you go for the 3g or 2g you will need to add the unlimited data bolt on.

Sorry, i diddnt mean IMEI, i meant the sim number.

the PAYG 3g will work with a o2 contract sim without unlocking.

Ok thats great news! One final question when I activate the new PAYG 3G iPhone, which sim card should I use - the PAYG one or my current cotract one?
#12
Im not 100% sure if you current simcard will work so best to the one that comes with it. you can all ways get around the whole activation process by jail breaking it anyway.

No thats fine, I'm getting a bolt-on on my current contract for unlimited web!
