iPhone on O2 - Unlocking?

Hi, I have asked related questions in the past, but I finally got myself an iPhone. This one is locked to O2, and while that is not an immediate issue as i use Tesco, I would still like to get it unlocked.

Any thoughts as to how I could get it officially unlocked? I've asked the seller to help, but unlikely they may do so. Any other methods anyone could suggest?

o2 unlock for free if you're on a contract, if you're payg it's £15

If you're payg, you need to have at least £20 credit in your phone for the feature to work, also, it should be unlocked within 48 hours but it's normally 24....

Another thing, it's done through itunes, you need an o2 sim in your phone, keep it in until the 'you're iphone is now unlocked' text comes, then put in a non o2 sim (but not tesco as they use o2 network), connect to itunes and you're phone should be unlocked.
If you don't have an o2 sim, buy one and put £20 on it as fleabay charges £30 for the same service

can i use someone else's contract to get this unlocked and avoid paying the £15 fee? Though they dont own an iPhone.. It is a regular phone contract.

Yes you can, and an official unlock is the best way. Although you would have to keep their sim for a while.

Oh damn.. so even if the seller asks O2 to unlock it, it would be pointless if i need to have the actual sim inside?

Does it matter if it is a iphone 3gs contract or an iphone 4 contract?

Wasnt there a link posted several months ago on here whereby you have have a chat with an o2 rep and they will check right there and then and tell you if they can unlock for free, for a fee or at all?
