Iphone OR G1 (google) OR Blackberry Storm

Sorry if this has previously been asked but I couldnt find it.

So I am looking for a new phone and a contract and wanted advise from all wise and geniuses of HUKD.

What should it be?

Iphone on O2 - £99 for the phone and £35 for 18 months or
G1 on T-mobile for free and £40 for 18 months or
Blackberry Storm on Vodafone for free on £40 for 18 months??

I am really struggling and will be waiting for the price drops in the next few weeks before I decide but which phone should it be?

G1 on Combi 40 for 12 months NOT 18 & 50£ for the handset. (I have been doing my research) :whistling:

£40 * 18 > £40 * 12 + 50£ :-D

Kogonai - How did you get the 12 months deal?

I just spoke with T-mobile CS and they said they only have 2 contracts for 18 months out for the G1!! The 12 month deal seems awesome! Any info would be appreciated!

Checked in one of the stores & then verified in other store which they confirmed.

Now you are scaring me

Looks like I am going to have to try the tmobile shops tomorrow. Only if they offered it online we could have also got quidco!! which could have made the phone £15!! Let me know if you find out anymore. Just saw some reviews on youtube... G1 looks awesome. Only if they would have improved the camera to 5 mega pixel and maybe given 2 - 8gb built in memory!!

You are right 5MP would have been a killer. Although I dont mind 3MP too.
I will check a 3rd store tomorrow just to be very sure that they actually didnt fool me & they have those deals in store.
I cant buy until the end of the month anyways, but WILL definitely go for it.

Looks like it will have to be the G1 for me... also the keypad is a plus! I will now be gutted if they dont offer it to me on a 12 month contract!! Maybe it could only be an upgrade deal for you!
#12
Also the HTC touch HD looks good...! also has a 5 megapixel camera.... I have got a headache now looking and thinking about phones!
#13
I have so many Touch Phones / PDA's now, but the G1 should definitely be the best.

I still have an unopened boxed MDA Vario 2 which I never used as I got an Upgrade on MDA Vario3 at the same time. ;)
#14
I'd go for the Blackberry Storm.

I still dont get the point of Blackberry phones! OK - so it can be set to push emails... but so can any PDA phone!

Or am I missing something?

I'm a bit annoyed with myself! Have a problem with my HTC Kaiser. (Basically the radio Ive used isnt very good on O2) Anyway, after speaking to them and getting no help, I asked for a PAC. Was offered a free Touch Diamond on the normal £35 tarrif (ie 600 mins, 1000 text and web bolt-on) for £25 per month. (I get a 30% discount with O2 - so didnt represent a good deal I thought) Anyway - I thought Id go for it in the end (as I thought Id be able to wangle getting that discount applied anyway.)

So phoned back - and get told £35pm - no discount could be applied and the phone would cost £99.

So I got the PACs for both my contracts. They say they had no record of the call - and couldnt offer any better than what they had just done. Why is it it depends on who you speak to as to what they are "allowed" to offer? All the same "retention" department.. or is it?

Company's seem to be shafting consumers more and more these days. Although to be fair some phone company's will make a good offer to you on the basis that you accept it there and then rather than phone back later.

I had a look at that G1 phone and it looks quite good actually, It would be interesting to see how it fairs with the others the OP mentioned.

What I did wrong was to just let it go. I should have said "I need to have a look at the phone first" and get the persons details. To be honest, I know I can get this deal anyway as a new customer - what I'm miffed with is the fact I could have got this package for £17.50 once the discount I get was applied. (Not guarrenteed to get it - and had decided Id rather have the Omnia, Experia or G1.)

G1 is only t-mobile isnt it? If it is it rules it out..... Not gonna use them ever again.

Dunno...... But Im not gonna throw away the 30% discount I get! I know both the Experia and Omnia will be out on O2 - so guess my next phone will be between those two.

Pre-ordered a Storm...

I think the G1 is a great phone but too clunky and looks fugly!! There will be more Android based handsets in the coming months so might be worth holding out for something 'better' but HTC HD looks promising but tied to Orange initially.

What is with all this exclusivity bull, so much for choosing which handset we want to buy on our choice of network, what's wrong with a bit of healthy competition?

Guv similar thing happened to me on O2 - at the end of the contract they didnt even offer me the same price as the new customers and no discounts - hence I took the PAC code and am without a contract.

Will be visiting some phone shops today so will update later

It might be worth waiting a bit if you can as I'm sure there'll be some competition for customers once the initial interest of the new handsets has gone and the networks start seeking fresh blood.

The other thing is I'm sure there'll be some bugs to fix from the early takers so it may be worth the wait to see that there are no major problems with these handsets.

Happy hunting and keep us posted on any deals you find ;-)

Whatever you buy, don't forget quidco, got £91 from Vodafone for my Blackberry preorder.
#27
Sorry people... I just tied myself onto an Orange contract!!!
Didnt end up getting any of the phones I mentioned... Instead got a HTC Touch HD :)

12 months contract - £38 per month - 79.99 for the phone and £150 Quidco!! (£386 for the year... the phone on its own is more expensive than this) Works out cheaper than any contract on the phones mentioned above! I am delighted as the HD looks absolutely brilliant and has everything I could ask for.

What do you people think? Have I made a mistake be getting this or is it a good deal?

I think youve made a wise choice.

Its gonna be my next phone as well.

Just hope it tracks for ya!

(Now just waiting for O2 to pull their finger out!)

Hey Imran.

I was really only looking to get the phone on the cheapest tarrif for the 12 months.

I went for the Dolphin 40 - 12 months tarrif that gives 600 mins and 500 txts and sorry no data. but I have wireless at home and internet at work so dont really need it. Dont think I will use internet when I am out an about but if I need to then have my work phone :)

But after £150 quidco works out to be the cheapes compared to the Iphone, G1, Storm and is a lot better looking and has everything I need... Awesome.

yeah the HD does look like the best phone... I think i might call orange up and try to hustle them into giving me a great deal! I want some download allowance just incase I need to google something or to pop my mail!

for your situation it sounds like you got the best deal going! dont forget to update with how the phone is when it arrives!

Just one word of warning regarding data.......

Whilst I understand what you say about "not needing it" - be a bit careful within the settings. Lots of things (like googlemaps for example) will automatically log on and start downloading. There's plenty of things like that on the phone. (I know when I use GPS on my Kaiser it has an auto-update for satellite positioning.)

I'd imaging there is a way to switch off "internet" - but I'd think that would also affect you if you wanted wireless. It's not something I've look at though to be honest. Since I got my laptop dongle, the only time I notice the phone is online is in the type of examples above. And with an "unlimited" (haha) bolt on, I dont think thats gonna affect too much.

Yes will definitely let the HUKD community know when I get it on Friday and will give you all a mini review from my perspective.

Unlimited data bolt on is around £8 a month... umm.. not too sure. I'd rather pay a quid or two if an when I have used it... cant wait for the phone now... :)
