My brother is on O2, he has a cheapish contract. Can he order an iphone from apple and just put his existing chip into it?

No you will still need to unlock it and activate it once you have the phone. You can do this using the ziphone software. Then you will be able to use your existing sim in it.
(You won't actually be signing up to any new contract as you wont activate it through itunes).

If you purchase the iphone online through O2 you can get £35 cashback or go through carphone warehouse and get £60 through quidco!

Should be no need to unlock it, just activate it, and if you've sense jailbreak it too so you can download loads of software for it...

As Melu says, ziphone is really easy and safe to use

i downloaded ziphone yesterday and installed on my comp. Im still waiting for apple to deliver my iphone, im on orange and will have to unlock phone. I was reading on some of the forums that sometimes there are problems when you unlock it. Is it really as simple as clicking the button and letting the program do its job?

Pretty much, mine didn't quite work properly first time, but rebooted phone back into recovery mode and second time around it worked, that was with an early version of ziphone though.

If all else fails put it in recovery mode, conenct to itunes and let it re-install the firmware then go again with ziphone

Tried to find it online but have got conflicting answers on whether or not you need to unlock it? I think it should work without unlocking but you should jailbreak it yes and activate.

If I were you id keep it locked on O2.

If you are using it on PAYG remember it will try to connect to GPRS whenever available! If you don't want this then delete the gprs settings.

This thread is under 3 days old...You ordered from Apple and got it delivered in that much time? Nice one cos apple aren't known for their quick delivery.

How comes you didn't get from O2 or carphone warehouse? Much better cashback value! (Or had you already ordered it before the original post?)

Carphone warehouse had no 16gb ones in stock and i like a little kid got excited about the iphone so ordered from apple on Tuesday via quidco and the £20 voucher therefore worked out at £305.50. Just sitting at work playing with it now. By the way ive got no wi-fi here, can i still use internet ( maps, safari etc.) via gprs, or is that also dependent on signal?

just need a case now, where would be the cheapest?

Agent 18 Eco Shield for iPhone according to the apple site

Use either wi-fi or edge (gprs) depending on which is available. Use wi-fi whenever you can as its faster and most likely free! Use your gprs if you have a data plan obviously otherwise can get expensive.

Mines on t-mobile flext and don't have web and walk (so use wi-fi only) but thinkin about getting it.

As for case/skin buy a cheap silicon one from ebay? I don't use a cover for mine.

btw I got £60 off mine :p

I'm using T-Mobile but be warned data is very slow, I think they only have GPRS and not edge...

Yeah I knew T-Mobile use the not-so-enhanced GPRS.

Thing is though I have a half price Flext contract (for life :p) so the web 'n' walk add on would only cost me £3.75 a month. But if you're saying its deathly slow then I may not bother.

Thanx for the rep manj.

It's not al lost, it's ok for downliading email headers etc. General surfing is a dead loss. Mate's on O2 and his is noticeably quicker.

When they finally release the 3G version it should be perfect onT-Mobile

That would mean buying (and unlocking :whistling:) a new iphone handset though :x

Lets hope they integrate video in the camera then as a major function of 3G is video calling!
