  If it's silver back it's definitely a 2G and therefore doesn't have GPS.
  
  Ndrive, or any other satnav app would be useless.

  I think you are mixing up 1st Generation, 2nd Generation and the 2g,3g,3gs models.
  
  The 2g is the "1st Generation" iphone. The 3g is the 2nd generation iphone etc.
  
  I can confirm that if it has a silver back it is a 1st Gen or 2g iphone which will not have GPS.

  In there, stick in your serial number of your iphone and it will tell you the full tech specs. Your serial number can be found on the phone under Settings>General>About... then scroll down to Serial number.

  Just don't lose it in a bar.
  Also iphone have poor battery when using internet/ gps.

  Shiney back could be construed two ways!
  
  The 1st gen iphone (the one you have) has a silver back with black bit at the bottom.
  2nd gen (3g) iPhone has a all plastic shiny back :)
