He was trying to update to firmware 2.02 and it failed it is now stuck in recovery mode (at least I think that is what it is, has the usb wire on the screen, flashes to the apple and back again) tried to go back to various other firmware and it looks as though it is downloading then get message error 20 this iphone could not be updated! :?

Try getting it into DFU mode and see if that makes a difference, it might take a few goes to get it done!

DFU Restore Mode:

1. Power phone OFF. 2. Hold power + home for 10 seconds. 3. Let go of power and continue to hold home until iTunes finds the phone.

the timing is critical!! if you have watch use it to count the seconds it really makes a difference.

Will have a go at this, have tried it before but did not realise that the timing was so crucial.

Thanks Dub1, might just take you up on that if we don't get anywhere with getting it into DFU mode!

DFU mode is 100% the way to go watch a youtube guide, like was mentioned above its all about counting the seconds correctly

Try QuickPWN. It has a tutorial built in to guide you through the whole DFU process & it will do the business with your phone as well.

Hi Dub1,
My son has tried getting the phone into DFU mode several times now with no joy, if your offer to have a stab at it is still open could you please pm me your address, also what would you need ie just the phone or would you require any of the cables.
Thank you so much for your offer, don't feel obliged to go ahead with it if you have changed your mind that is fine.
Cheers
Heather
