My friend reakons he has got an upgrade deal on 3 for a new iphone.

Brand new 16GB 3GS
100 minutes
100 texts
unlimited internet
£6 per months for 24 months (no initial payment)
as an upgrade from 3.
Is he having a laugh??? He's adamant thats the deal.

His friend called and tried to get the same deal but they offered him it all for £15 as an upgrade with an initial £80 lay out.

This all sounds too good to be true, so I can only asume it is.
Any thoughts anyone?????

Definately sounds too good to be true. How much did he pay towards the phone?
#2
Nothing. He said it was completely free.

£144 for an iphone 3gs? I think he's blagging a bit. I know people say the phone is an incentive but we all know really a lot of companies use the monthly fee towards the cost of the phone.

if i were him i would get 3 to send them confirmation in either writing or email that way they have proof should it come back to haunt him, £6 month for iphone even on 24 month contract does seem errrr odd to say the least, even tho its 100 mins and 100 texts and no payment for phone, if its geniune its a great deal, but would deffo get 3 to send them confirmation in writing/email tho

I thought Apple controlled the amount companies can charge for the iphone. I pay £40 a month for mine.

No. The phone is the companies, they'll charge whatever they like, same as any other handset. So normally for the iphone, you pay upfront then pay monthly, so for example, pay £50(ish) then £40 per month, £10 of that is probably used to cover calls/texts etc. and the other £30 to cover cost of the phone. Or pay more monthly and pay less initially, so iphone could be free but your paying £60 so again £10 for usage and £50 towards handset.

I agree. Because when his first bill comes in higher, three will say that they never offered him that deal or that the advisor who gave him that deal shouldnt have done it.

Oh OK. So the deal he is "getting" has no incentive for the company!
I cant see that they can do it for that. If its true its an incredible deal. Hes a straight up guy, I have no reason to doubt him other than what he is telling me sounds too good.

The only reason i can think of them doing that good a deal, is so he tells all his friends about it, three tell them if they join them they'll get similar offers when they upgrade. Either that, or he uses way more than 100mins/100 texts so they'll get money off him that way.

Surely thats only good if his friends get the same deal. He's certainly told some people though.

Well they might give them half decent deals to begin with...on the promise they can upgrade early or something.

Listen guys... This may be true, look at how many minutes he has. 100. They may be hoping that he goes over his 100 minute allowance and then charge him per minute for his calls. maybe a ploy to get £30 - £40 a month off him!

Obviously the smart thing to do would be get a sim only deal, and he has still got his iphone for £144.

It came today. He has the phone and the deal looks real.
Looked at his account and its for his wife, and her account is usually heavy on calls. She has a current plan with 500 minutes on it and she is always 30-40 quid over that!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is in trouble I think.

When you buy direct from Apple in any sort of bulk you have to agree to certain terms - one of those is the minimum price you can sell their products for (so the brand isn't "cheapened"). It's the reason why there are never price wars on Apple products, and are nearly always at RRP despite their being 20+% margin on some of their products.

EDIT - I don't think the deal is legit, but if it is, don't use the phone, sell it sealed and you'll get £350 back, pay the contract off and you'll still be £200 up. Then get a "proper" contract where the minutes aren't so restrictive. Or go SIM Only.

Sounds very much like the reason it was offered!

£6pm really = £200pm at those rates and over call spend!

Just get a new tarrif elsehere, pay them the £6pm and youve still got a decent deal for an iphone.
